After a time of suspense for many citizens of East Texas, we finally have our answer. Rudolph the Red Nosed Pumping Unit will continue to lighten the holiday season for many years to come.

The announcement came during the annual lighting event on Saturday, Nov. 21, as families gathered around Rudolph at the Lufkin Mall. Sponsored by GE, families could take pictures with a miniature sled and Rudolph, receive free cookies and milk from the Great American Cookie Company courtesy of Oak Farms, listen to live music by the Lufkin Community Band, and participate in the countdown itself.

The turnout was enormous. Lines of cars filled the Lufkin Mall parking lot. Smiling children with red noses and red foam antlers enjoyed the sights and smiled for photos by their camera-toting parents.

Larry Cordova, an employee of Lufkin Industries for 50 years, then began the countdown, granddaughter and grandson at his side. As the countdown began, the band kicked in and added to the excitement and suspense.

…3, 2, 1!

His grandchildren pressed the button, and Rudolph lit up, shining brighter than ever with the help of a few new additions. This year, 3,000 LED lights now adorn Rudolph along its shiny, red nose. The crowd cheered, expressing both excitement and relief to know that Lufkin’s favorite reindeer would continue to represent the perseverance and joy of this great city for many holidays to come.
