AC Athletics Weekly Update

Date:

September 10, 2023

A very busy week in Angelina College Athletics peaked on Sunday, when the Lady Roadrunner soccer team battled the 7th-ranked Navarro Bulldogs to a 2-2 draw. AC’s ladies managed to play the Bulldogs head-up despite having just 12 players suited up for the match.

AC’s soccer teams now get a needed break after this week, a week in which the No. 7 Roadrunner men scored a pair of wins and the Lady Runners went 2-0-1.

In addition, the Roadrunner baseball team started its fall baseball schedule this past Friday.

Here’s a recap of all the week’s action:

AC Soccer Teams Hold Home Opener

Angelina College soccer fans kicked off the new season in style, holding a tailgate party and other big events for Tuesday’s home-opening doubleheader against Paris College.

Both AC teams did their parts in ensuring there was even more to celebrate by sweeping the Lady Dragons and Dragons.

Suzy Palos scored the lone goal in the Lady ‘Runners’ 1-0 win, and the Roadrunners got goals from six different players – with Omar Mora scoring two goals – in a 7-1 win over the Dragons.

On Friday, the teams traveled to Athens for an afternoon matinee against Trinity Valley Community College. Again, AC’s squads brought the brooms to the sweep, with the Lady Roadrunners taking a 5-1 win over the Lady Cardinals and the Roadrunners earning a 3-0 win over the TVCC men.

Both AC teams get some much-needed rest this week. They won’t play again until Tuesday, Sept. 19 when they’ll host the two nationally ranked Tyler Junior College teams (the Lady Apaches are ranked No. 2 and the Apaches No. 10 in the latest national polls). That doubleheader kicks off with the women at 5 p.m., with the men following at 7:30 p.m.

Flores Sets Women’s Program Record:

Back on Friday, Sept. 1, the Lady Roadrunners opened their regular season with a 17-0 win at Northeast Texas Community College. In that match, AC’s Marlene Flores established a new program record for individual goals in a single match.

Flores, a sophomore from Bolivia, scored six goals in the match to top the previous record of five scores in a match.

East Texas Timbers Assist Soccer Match

Some of the Lady Roadrunners’ biggest fans are the young ladies who play for the East Texas Timbers youth soccer team. Some of those girls served as ball girls during Tuesday’s AC match against Paris College.

Baseball Updates Fall Ball Schedule:

The Roadrunner baseball team opened its fall season this past Friday against the Houston Heat, and they’ll host Temple College Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Poland Stadium on the AC campus. The ‘Runners then play a doubleheader on Friday in Melissa, Texas against Bossier Parish Community College (1 p.m.) and Panola College (4 p.m.)

AC baseball recently updated its entire fall schedule, so make sure to visit the Angelina College Athletics website (angelinaathletics.com) to stay up-to-date.

The Man of the Match Chain:

If you haven’t gotten a gander at the Roadrunner men’s soccer team’s “Man of the Match Chain,” you’re missing out. Coaches name the MOTM after each match, and that player gets to sport the coveted chain and medallion.

After Tuesday’s match, Christian Castaneda was the one selected to don the eye-popping piece of jewelry. Before that, Omar Mora earned the privilege after the team’s win at NTCC.

STAY TUNED…

The Lady Roadrunner softball team will host its 2nd Annual Alumni game at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23. Rumor has it there may be some members of the 2014 National Championship team showing up to show out.

And we’re still a few weeks away, but both Angelina College basketball teams are putting together their schedules. The men’s schedule should show up on the web site later this week.

As always, for the latest schedule updates, visit the AC Athletics web site (angelinaathletics.com) or follow us on Twitter (@ACAthletics) or on the Angelina College Athletics Facebook page.
