Lower Speed Limit Being Set in Grapeland

Date:

LUFKIN – Houston County residents near the city of Grapeland will see a reduced speed limit in coming days.
Texas Transportation Commissioners in March approved the speed limit reduction outside the city limits of Grapeland on US 287 to 60 miles per hour from 75 mph. The speed limit within the city is 60 mph, which will now be extended outside the city limits on both north and south sides. The new speed limit will be enforceable once signs are set. Motorists are urged to be alert and reduce speed.

The lower speed limit was approved after TxDOT engineers conducted engineering and traffic investigations and determined the speed was a safe and reasonable maximum speed for the area based on a speed study and crash investigations. The 60 mph speed limit will extend for 1.1 miles from the city limits of Grapeland on the north side to 0.272 miles south of the city limits of Grapeland.
