Softball Defeats Jacksonville State at Best on the Bayou Classic

Stephen F. Austin State opened the 2022 campaign this past weekend at the Best of the Bayou Classic.
SFA earned a hard-fought 11-7 win over Jacksonville State.
Knotted at 2-2 after one inning of play, junior Gabby Garcia singled to center field and sophomore Simone Medeiros took advantage of a JSU error to score to break the tie. Senior Mackenzie Bennett doubled to score Garcia and the Ladyjacks led 4-2.
SFA put the game out of reach in its part of the third inning when junior Shaylon Govan delivered a grand slam to extend the lead to 8-4. The Ladyjacks added three more runs to put the game out of reach.
Govan finished 3-for-5 with four RBI, while Hope Lusk batted 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
Sophie Hannabas earned the win in the circle. The sophomore tossed four innings, scattered five hits, and struck out four.
Brooke Gainous entered in relief to earn the save. The freshman threw three innings, allowed five hits and fanned six.
As a team, SFA pounded out 10 hits, 10 RBI, and drew eight walks.
SFA returns to action Tuesday and plays host to Baylor.
