Quitting smoking is almost never simple or easy, but according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it’s one of the most important steps you can take for your health. Luckily, there are several ways to get assistance to quit smoking.

World No Tobacco Day is May 31, and an ideal opportunity to kickstart your efforts to stop smoking. Nearly 70 percent of smokers want to quit and more than half will try this year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If you’re a smoker who’s ready to quit, you can increase your chances of success by talking to your doctor about it, as well as leveraging free resources.

The American Lung Association suggests tobacco users who want to quit should consult their doctor, who can help them design a quit plan that may include medication and counseling. Keep in mind, these tobacco cessation treatments are often covered by insurance.
