Angelina College Athletics Weekly Update

Date:

It was a relatively quiet week for AC Athletics programs, but that won’t happen again this week.

The soccer teams got a well-earned week off after the Lady Roadrunners’ match last Sunday against No. 7 Navarro College. In that game, a scrappy – but outnumbered – Lady ‘Runner squad battled the seventh-ranked Bulldogs to a 2-2 draw.

Things will heat up over the next several days, starting with Tuesday’s soccer home doubleheader against the Tyler Junior College teams – both of which are nationally ranked.

Following is a short recap of the past week, along with upcoming events.

Lady Roadrunners 2, No. 7 Navarro College 2

With just one extra position player on the bench because of injuries, the Lady ‘Runners were more than a little outnumbered against a talented and deep Navarro team.

It took all of three minutes for AC’s ladies to serve notice they weren’t about to back down.

Estephany Aguilar smoked a one-timer from long range past the Navarro keeper at the ‘4-minute mark, Tannia Diaz added another AC score at ’26 and the Lady ‘Runners stunned the seventh-ranked Bulldogs with a quick 2-0 lead.

Unfortunately, AC’s lack of depth meant the ladies on the pitch would stay there for every minute of the 90-minute match. Navarro capitalized on the ensuing fatigue and cramping, scoring twice to even the match.

Still, the Lady Roadrunners held off late Bulldog charges to finish with the 2-2 draw. The result keeps AC atop the Region XIV South Zone standings at 3-0-1 for the season.

The next two matches will provide more tests for the Lady ‘Runners: On Tuesday, AC hosts No. 2 Tyler Junior College at 5 p.m., and on Friday the Lady ‘Runners take on Blinn College, also at 5 p.m.

No. 7 Roadrunner Men’s Soccer Hosting Key Matches

AC’s men got an entire week off, but they managed to stay busy with heavy-duty training schedules throughout the week.

They’re making sure they’re ready for two huge matches coming this week.

The seventh-ranked Roadrunners (3-0) will host No. 10 Tyler Junior College on Tuesday as part of a women’s/men’s doubleheader. The ‘Runners are scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

Then, on Friday, the ‘Runners again take part in a home doubleheader against Blinn College. Again, that kickoff is scheduled to take place at 7:30 p.m.

Roadrunner Baseball Hosts Fall Ball Game

AC’s baseball team hosts an afternoon matinee on Wednesday, as the Roadrunners face TCS Post Grad starting at 1 p.m. at Poland Stadium.

Lady Roadrunner Softball Players Don Soccer Cleats

Angelina College head women’s soccer coach Orlando Cervantes arrived to AC late in the recruiting season, putting his squad at a distinct disadvantage. The team certainly has talent (the Lady ‘Runners are 3-0-1 on the season), but it seriously lacks depth – a must-have considering the relentless nature of the game. Against No. 7 Navarro College (a match ending in a 2-2 draw), several Lady Roadrunners battled through heat cramps just to stay on the pitch. There just wasn’t enough help available on the bench.

The incoming help is coming from the most unexpected of sources.

Eight Lady Roadrunner softball players have volunteered to head across the Larry Phillips Family Sports Complex to join their classmates and provide much-needed depth.

You heard that right. Some AC softball players are trading their gloves and bats for soccer kits, joining the soccer team in order to provide the needed depth. Some of the women have played the game at various levels, and their athleticism certainly will help in providing breathers for the starters.

There’ll be more on this story coming soon.

AC Athletes Assist at Forest Festival

Anyone attending the annual East Texas Forest Festival this past weekend very likely encountered some Angelina College athletes in uniform.

Several athletes, coaches, and staff members served as volunteers at the Festival, offering their services in everything from parking assistants to various setups.

It’s all part of the coaches’ focus on ensuring student-athletes repay the community’s support.

STAY TUNED…

The Lady Roadrunner softball team will host its 2nd Annual Alumni game at 1 p.m. on

Saturday, Sept. 23. Rumor has it there may be some members of the 2014 National

The championship team showing up to show out.
