Angelina College Athletics Weekly Update

Date:

Hey, sports fans,

Another busy week on the softball and baseball diamonds, along with news of some well-deserved postseason accolades for our Lady Roadrunner and Roadrunner basketball players.

Here’s a quick rundown of the past week’s events, along with what’s coming up next:

AC Baseball Takes One of Three From Tyler

After dropping the series opener 14-6 in seven innings Wednesday in Tyler, the Roadrunners rebounded with a 5-3 win over the Apaches in the opener of Saturday’s home doubleheader at Poland Stadium. AC’s Jacob Tanguma and Diesel Gonzalez each drove in a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie, and reliever Austin Gaskins finished off his third inning of relief and earn the win by tossing a scoreless seventh inning. Starting pitcher Damon Anthony allowed just two earned runs over his four innings on the mound.

Tyler squeezed out an 8-7 win in the nightcap despite the ‘Runners’ late charge. Cooper Molnes and Ryan Lewis each drove in two runs, while Cole Standley and Mark Henderson added an RBI each.

The Roadrunners (18-23, 7-14) open this week’s three-game series against Paris College Wednesday at Paris. That game is set for a 3 p.m. start.

The teams then finish off the series on Good Friday with a doubleheader scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at Poland Stadium on the AC campus.

Lady Roadrunner Softball Falls to Lamar-PA, Blinn

The Lady Roadrunners hit a rough stretch of conference play this week, falling at Lamar State College-Port Arthur by 6-5 and 6-2 scores on Wednesday before suffering an 8-5, 10-9 (nine innings) sweep at home Saturday against Blinn College.

AC’s Izzy Allen blasted her sixth homer of the season in Saturday’s opener against the Lady Bucs, while Katherine Page drove in three runs.

In the nightcap, AC’s ladies pushed the 2nd place Lady Bucs to extra innings, rallying from a 7-1 deficit to tie the score in the seventh, only to see Blinn tack on three runs in the top of the ninth.

Emily Zunker finished the game with three RBI, while Emma Flayol and Trinnity Blatz drove in two runs each.

Following Saturday’s games, the Lady ‘Runners honored Brianna Collazo, Madison Johnson, River Hulsey and Riley Davila on Sophomore Day.

The Lady ‘Runners (14-30, 7-9) travel to Alvin College on Monday for a doubleheader featuring a 1 p.m. start. AC then hosts Coastal Bend CC on Wednesday, with a twin bill set for an 11 a.m. start because of CCBC’s travel situation.
