Angelina County is under a burn ban, effective immediately.
The order came through the Angelina County Emergency Alert System on Wednesday, Oct. 14, over the name of County Judge Keith Wright. It asks residents to refrain from any outdoor burning at this time, and it runs for seven days unless the Angelina County Commissioners Court extends it.
The wording is broad — any outdoor burning — so a brush pile or a stack of limbs waiting on a calm day waits longer than that.
Burn bans in this part of the state follow dry stretches, when cured grass and leaf litter carry fire faster than people expect and a fire a landowner meant to control gets away from him in a few minutes. Several Forest Country counties to the north were already under bans in late September.
The commissioners court sets and lifts the county’s burn bans, and a seven-day order can be extended. Anyone planning outdoor work that involves fire next week should check whether the ban is still in place before striking a match.
