Every summer, homeowners across East Texas ask some version of the same question: “Why does my water bill keep climbing, and why does my lawn still look thirsty?”
Most of the time, the answer isn’t that they’re not watering enough. It’s that they’re watering the wrong way in the wrong places. There’s a real science to efficient irrigation, and once you understand it, you can grow a healthier landscape while using less water in the process.
Let’s walk through the two main tools in the irrigation toolbox—drip and spray—what each one is actually good at, and why the best East Texas landscapes almost never use just one or the other.
Two Different Jobs, Two Different Tools
Spray irrigation is what most folks picture when they think “sprinkler system.” Rotating heads or fixed spray heads pop up and throw water out across an area, covering ground broadly and evenly. It’s the right tool for turf—open lawn areas where you need consistent, even coverage across a wide, flat expanse of grass.
Drip irrigation works differently. Instead of spraying water through the air, it delivers water directly to the root zone of individual plants through small emitters, drop by drop, right where the roots need it. That makes drip the right tool for planting beds, foundation plantings, and garden areas—anywhere you’re watering specific plants rather than a broad turf surface.
The mistake a lot of homeowners make isn’t choosing the wrong system. It’s assuming they have to pick just one for the whole property. They don’t. In fact, they shouldn’t.
Why Drip Irrigation Is So Efficient
University extension research is pretty consistent on this point: drip irrigation commonly reduces water use by 30% to 70% compared to spray systems, depending on the setup and the site. That’s not a small difference—that’s the kind of number that shows up directly on a water bill.
The reason comes down to how the water is applied. Drip systems deliver water at rates that are matched to how fast the soil can actually absorb it. Spray irrigation, by contrast, can put down water faster than a landscape bed can soak it up, which means some of that water runs off before it ever does the plant any good, and some of it evaporates in the air or off the soil surface before it reaches the roots at all.
There are a couple of other benefits worth knowing about, especially here in East Texas.
- Drier foliage, healthier plants. Because drip irrigation targets the root zone instead of soaking the leaves, it keeps foliage drier. That matters a lot in our humid climate, where wet leaves sitting overnight are an open invitation to fungal and foliar disease. Less moisture on the leaves means less disease pressure, plain and simple.
- No losses to wind drift. Anybody who’s stood outside on a windy East Texas afternoon and watched a sprinkler head throw water sideways knows exactly what we mean. Spray irrigation can lose a meaningful share of its water to drift before a single drop hits the ground. Drip systems don’t have that problem—the water travels through tubing straight to the emitter, so wind doesn’t touch it.
Where Drip Isn’t the Right Answer
Drip irrigation isn’t the answer to everything, and it’s worth understanding why.
Drip systems require more careful design and more ongoing attention than spray. Emitters can clog over time—from mineral buildup, from debris, from root intrusion—and they need to be checked periodically to make sure they’re still delivering water the way they’re supposed to. A bed with a few clogged emitters can end up with dry patches that are easy to miss until a plant is already stressed.
Layout matters too. Drip lines have to be designed carefully to make sure every plant in a bed is getting even coverage. It’s not as simple as running a line down the middle and calling it done—spacing, emitter flow rates, and zone length all have to be thought through, especially as beds mature and plants grow into their space.
And for turf, drip simply isn’t practical. You can’t run individual emitters to every blade of grass across a quarter-acre lawn. For open turf areas, spray systems remain the right choice—they’re built for exactly that kind of broad, even coverage.
The Real Answer: A System That Uses Both
This is the part worth remembering. A well-designed irrigation system isn’t an either/or choice between drip and spray for the whole property. It’s both, working together, each one assigned to the areas it does best.
Spray heads handle the lawn. Drip lines handle the beds, the foundation plantings, and the garden areas. Thinking through irrigation this way—zone by zone, matching the watering method to what’s actually growing there—is as much a planning exercise as it is an installation job. Get the zones right from the start, and the system does its job efficiently for years. Get them wrong, and a yard ends up fighting dry spots and soggy spots in the same season.
Understanding How Much Water a Lawn Actually Needs
Here’s a number that surprises a lot of homeowners. During peak summer heat, the warm-season turfgrasses common here in East Texas—Bermudagrass, St. Augustinegrass, and Zoysiagrass—can lose more than a quarter inch of water a day to evapotranspiration in hot, sunny conditions. That means a 1,000 square foot lawn may need 150 gallons of water or more per day just to stay healthy during the hottest stretch of summer.
Evapotranspiration, or ET, is essentially the combined water loss from evaporation off the soil surface and transpiration through the grass itself. It’s the reason a lawn that looked fine in early June can start showing stress by late July even if the watering routine hasn’t changed at all—the ET rate has climbed with the heat, and the lawn’s water needs have climbed right along with it.
This is exactly why watering by the calendar—two fixed days a week, no matter what—isn’t the most efficient approach. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension runs something called the Texas ET Network, which provides real-time evapotranspiration data from weather stations positioned around the state. Homeowners and landscape professionals alike can use that data to schedule watering based on what the lawn actually needs in a given week, rather than a fixed schedule that doesn’t account for a stretch of 100-degree days or a week of surprise rain.
Understanding ET is part of how a thoughtfully managed landscape avoids both extremes—underwatering, which stresses turf and thins it out, and overwatering, which wastes water, encourages shallow root systems, and can actually make a lawn less drought-tolerant over time.
Don’t Forget the Clay
There’s one more piece of the puzzle that’s specific to our part of Texas: the soil under your feet.
Much of the soil across Deep East Texas is heavy clay, and clay has a low infiltration rate—meaning water can only soak into it so fast, regardless of whether it’s coming from a drip emitter or a spray head. Apply water faster than the clay can absorb it, and you get runoff, plain and simple. Water that runs off the surface never makes it down to the root zone, so it’s wasted no matter how efficient the delivery method was on paper.
That’s why irrigation planning has to account for cycle length and zone separation by plant type, not just equipment choice. A common technique is “cycle and soak”—running a zone for a shorter period, letting the water soak in, then running it again, rather than trying to apply a full watering all at once. On clay soil, that approach can be the difference between water that actually reaches the grass roots and water that just runs down the driveway.
The Bottom Line
Spray and drip irrigation aren’t competitors—they’re teammates. Spray covers turf efficiently and evenly. Drip delivers precise, low-waste watering straight to the roots of beds and plantings, cutting water use by 30% to 70% in the process while keeping foliage drier and avoiding wind losses spray systems can’t escape. Add in an understanding of a lawn’s real ET-based water needs and East Texas’s clay soil, and you’ve got everything needed to keep a landscape healthy without wasting a drop.
