Fair Housing Month Is Coming Up

Date:

The Board of Directors of the Deep East Texas Council of Governments and Economic Development District has designated April 2021 as Fair Housing Month in Deep East Texas. Its recently adopted resolution recognizes the significance of Fair Housing Month as an important time to acknowledge, better understand, and support Equal Housing Opportunity.

On April 11, 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law the federal Fair Housing Act. This provides that no person shall be subjected to discrimination because of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, or familial status in the sale, rental, financing, or advertising of housing.  53 years later, the provisions found in the Fair Housing Act are still highly important and relevant today.

DETCOG supports equal housing opportunity and housing choice in accordance with the Fair Housing Act not only during Fair Housing Month in April, but throughout the entire year. It encourages all individuals and organizations, public and private, to join and work together in this
observance of the impact and importance of affordable housing and equal housing opportunity to the success of all Texans.
