Haylen Green’s memorable freshman season came up just a few wins short of the national title as the TCU Horned Frogs were eliminated from the College World Series with a 3-0 loss to the Florida Gators in Omaha, Neb., on Saturday night.
TCU finished a single win shy of the championship series as it was defeated for the second time in three tries by the Gators.
In his lone appearance at the College World Series, Green did his job in pitching a scoreless inning. In an opening 3-0 loss to Florida, he came on in relief and didn’t allow a runner to reach base.
However, the Horned Frogs eventually dropped a 3-0 decision.
TCU followed that up with wins over Texas A&M (4-1), Louisville (4-3) and Florida (9-2), all games in which Green didn’t see action on the mound.
The win over Florida set up a rubber match against the Gators for a spot in the championship series. Green warmed up in the bullpen on several occasions but never got into the game.
For the season, Green finished with a 2-1 record with a 3.10 ERA. In 15 games, including two starts, he pitched 20 1/3 innings, allowing nine runs, seven earned, on 11 hits. He also struck out 24 batters while walking only nine and he held opponents to a .155 average.
Green was a 2016 graduate of Lufkin where he helped the Panthers to the regional finals.
Florida and LSU are currently playing in the best-of-three championship series, which started on Monday night in Omaha and can be seen on ESPN.
