County Attorney Ed Jones delivered the state of the county address for the First Friday Luncheon Friday afternoon, Feb. 5 at Crown Colony Country Club.
“There are many elected offices in the county,” Jones said. “They must work together to have the best outcome for the citizens of the county.”
The legislating body of county is the commissioner’s court. The court is responsible for maintaining the budget and creating a tax rate based on the budget.
Currently, the tax rate of Angelina is just over 45 1/2 cents for $100, which is roughly the same as the tax rate eight years ago. Per capita tax rate is $326 average across the state, state per capita is 556$ per person.
The Commissioner’s court meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month and it is open to the public.
The county acts as an extension of the state and elected officials oversee the everyday business of running the county. Election cycles for county government are in 4 year cycles.
Jones briefed those in attendance on the offices that are up for election this year, which includes Constables, County Attorney, District Attorney, Commissioners, County Tax Assessor/Collector, and the County Sheriff.
“I urge you to take part in the political process,” Jones said. “Early voting begins Feb. 16, and the Chamber is sponsoring political forum Feb. 22.”
