Hey, sports fans,
First of all, this will be the last AC Athletics Weekly Update until Sunday, Jan. 5. Our fall semester has ended, and our teams wrapped up their final games of the semester this past Saturday. There are no more games on the schedule until Thursday, Jan. 2.
The AC campus has closed for the holidays and will reopen on Monday, Jan. 6.
That said, we just wrapped up a busy week of basketball games, a baseball camp, and news of a former Roadrunner soccer player going pro. We’ll also feature a Prospect Camp for future Lady Roadrunner softball players; that will take place in late January, but we’re making sure we get the word out ASAP.
Here’s a quick rundown of the week’s events, along with what’s coming up next:
Roadrunner Basketball Splits Conference Games, Takes First Place in Region XIV
The Roadrunners ran into a buzzsaw of a defense Wednesday in Athens, falling to the No. 1 team in the nation (Trinity Valley Community College) by a 68-45 score.
AC’s guys then showed their mettle in a huge bounce-back win on Saturday, with the ‘Runners knocking off Bossier Parish Community College by a 66-56 margin.
That win, coupled with TVCC’s loss to Panola, keeps the Roadrunners (9-2, 3-1) in first place in the Region XIV standings heading into the holiday break.
In Saturday’s win over BPCC, AC’s Daemon Ely blew up the stat sheets with 17 points, 16 rebounds, five steals and two assists. Chris Carpenter and Kyle Morgan scored 12 points each, while Kanaan Holder added 10 points in the win.
AC’s next game is at home against Temple College on Thursday, Jan. 2 at Shands Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m., and the game will be live-streamed on TSBN Sports.
Lady Roadrunners Beat SWCC, Fall to Dallas Angels
The Lady Roadrunners hosted Southwestern Christian College on Tuesday and used a 25-point, 11-rebound night from AC’s Lanaijha Johnson to cruise to a 75-49 win over the Rams at Shands Gymnasium.
Shanice Ferguson also got into the double-double action with 15 points and 10 rebounds. India McMahon added 12 points and four steals in the win.
On Wednesday, the Lady ‘Runners hosted the Dallas Angels, a collection of former collegiate basketball players. AC fell 87-71 despite 23 points from Alicia Rivera-Scott and another 19 points from McMahon. Johnson added yet another double-double with 14 points and 10 boards.
The Lady Roadrunners (7-6) won’t return to action until Wednesday, Jan. 8, when AC’s ladies will host Western Gulf Collegiate at Shands Gymnasium. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
AC then will open conference play on Saturday, Jan. 11 at Coastal Bend Community College.
Former Roadrunner Soccer Standout Mora Signs First Professional Contract
Former Angelina College Roadrunner All-American Omar Mora has signed his first professional contract, joining his hometown El Paso Locomotive FC for the upcoming 2025 season.
Mora was a key player in the ‘Runners’ back-to-back appearances in the NJCAA Division I national tournament, helping AC to its first-ever Region XIV Conference Championship while earning the league’s MVP honors. Mora also earned 1st Team All-American status in 2023. In his two seasons at Angelina College, Mora made a total of 38 appearances, finishing with 27 goals and 17 assists.
Mora spent the 2024 season with Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla. He earned All-League 2nd Team and All-Newcomer Team in the Summit League following a 10-goal, one-assist freshman season.
The El Paso Locomotive FC is part of the USL Championship League, which features 24 clubs spread across the continental United States.
