East Texas residents are invited to broaden their understanding of tropical hazards and how to stay safe during the hurricane season at the Weather Forecast Office (WFO) Shreveport’s Tropical Preparedness Tour. The event, scheduled for Tuesday, July 25th, will shine a light on the far-reaching impact of tropical systems, which often extend beyond coastal areas.
“Lufkin is not immune to the effects of tropical weather systems. Even though we’re inland, hurricanes can and do affect our region,” says a spokesperson for WFO Shreveport. “Our aim with this tour is to help residents understand these hazards and be well-prepared for the 2023 Hurricane Season.”
The tour will feature discussions led by National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists, who will share their expertise on the hazards posed by landfalling hurricanes and other tropical systems across the Four State Region.
Topics will range from an overview of the 2023 Hurricane Season, and the science of hurricane forecasting, to tropical meteorology. Most importantly, residents will gain a better understanding of the potential impact these severe weather events can have on our local communities.
The first discussion of the tour will commence at 6:30 PM CDT at Angelina College in Lufkin. Participants will have the opportunity to engage directly with the meteorologists, asking questions and gaining insights to help safeguard their homes and families.
“We’re looking forward to engaging with the Lufkin community and empowering our citizens with this crucial knowledge,” adds the spokesperson. “We hope to see many of you there as we strive to weather the storm together.”
For those interested in attending, no advance registration is required. Come join this critical conversation and arm yourself with the knowledge to prepare and protect your community this hurricane season.
