COVID-19 Infection Increases Diabetes Risk

0
Results Also Suggest the Diabetes Risk Persists Across COVID-19 Variants, and That Upfront Vaccination May Help to Reduce Risk of Post-Infection Diabetes

Investigators in the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai have confirmed that people who have had COVID-19 have an increased risk for new-onset diabetes—the most significant contributor to cardiovascular disease.

“Our results validate early findings revealing a risk of developing Type 2 diabetes after a COVID-19 infection and indicate that this risk has, unfortunately, persisted through the Omicron era,” said Alan Kwan, MD, first and corresponding author of the study and a cardiovascular physician in the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai.

The trend, Kwan says, is concerning because most people in the United States will eventually experience a COVID-19 infection. “This research study helps us understand—and better prepare for—the post-COVID-19 era of cardiovascular risk,” Kwan said.

The findings, published today in the journal JAMA Network Open, also suggest that the risk of Type 2 diabetes appears lower in individuals who were already vaccinated against COVID-19 by the time they were infected.

To determine the rising rates of diabetes, investigators evaluated medical records from 23,709 adult patients who had at least one documented COVID-19 infection and were treated within the Cedars-Sinai Health System in Los Angeles from 2020-2022. The average patient was 47 years old, and 54% of subjects were female.

Within the study time frame:

  • The combined risk of Type 2 diabetes after COVID-19 exposure—accounting for both vaccinated and unvaccinated patients—was 2.1%, with 70% occurring after COVID-19 infection versus 30% happening prior to COVID-19 exposure.
  • The risk of Type 2 diabetes after COVID-19 exposure for unvaccinated patients was 2.7%, with 74% occurring after COVID-19 infection versus 26% happening prior to COVID-19 exposure.
  • The risk of Type 2 diabetes after COVID-19 exposure for vaccinated patients was 1.0%, with 51% occurring after COVID-19 infection versus 49% happening prior to COVID-19 exposure.

“These results suggest that COVID-19 vaccination prior to infection may provide a protective effect against diabetes risk,” said Kwan. “Although further studies are needed to validate this hypothesis, we remain steadfast in our belief that COVID-19 vaccination remains an important tool in protecting against COVID-19 and the still-uncertain risks that people may experience during the post-infection period.”

Susan Cheng, MD, MPH, senior author of the study, professor of Cardiology, and director for Cardiovascular Population Sciences in the Smidt Heart Institute, says these findings broaden the medical field’s understanding of the effects of COVID-19 on the body, while simultaneously unearthing yet-to-be-answered questions.

“Although we don’t yet know for certain, the trends and patterns that we see in the data suggest that COVID-19 infection could be acting in certain settings like a disease accelerator, amplifying risk for a diagnosis that individuals might have otherwise received later in life,” said Cheng, the Erika J. Glazer Chair in Women’s Cardiovascular Health and Population Science. “So, it could be that instead of being diagnosed with diabetes by age 65, a person with preexisting risk for diabetes might—after a COVID-19 infection—be more likely to develop diabetes by age 45 or 55.”

Diabetes disrupts normal metabolism and metabolic processes, preventing the pancreas from producing enough insulin, a hormone that helps regulate blood levels of glucose and amino acids. Because diabetes can damage vital organs and blood vessels, people with diabetes are at higher risk for heart attack and stroke.

The disease affects an estimated 26 million people in the United States.

This research, Kwan says, is one piece of the puzzle that will help researchers understand how to prevent metabolic as well as cardiovascular disease risk in the future.

“As we learn how to live with COVID-19, we also have to be prepared to recognize and treat the various conditions linked to its aftereffects,” said Kwan. “Our ultimate goal—with every research study we conduct—is to find ways to keep people healthy and able to engage in their everyday activities and lives.”

3 Essential Food Hacks Everyone Needs to Know

0

Food hacks make our lives so much more easy! Whether it’s preserving food for longer, or to make baking simpler, food hacks are essential for everyone’s daily living because they save time and sometimes even money!

Cookies

Have you ever baked cookies that only last for a day, and then get stale quickly after that first day? Well here is a food hack to help you! If you put a piece of bread with your cookies, the bread will absorb moisture in the air before the cookies do, which is why food becomes stale. Now, your cookies should last for a lot more time!

Butter

When baking cookies you always need some sort of dairy product such as butter or milk. Sometimes, you might forget to take the butter out and let it soften. Something to speed up the softening process is to slice the butter and it will soften faster. Another way for it to soften fast is to place a warm dish over the stick of butter.

Produce

When you slice apples, they turn brown quickly after. How can you stop that? Well, all you need to do is soak your apple slices in lemon juice and they will keep fresh for much longer. If you are cooking with lemons or limes, try microwaving them for 7-10 seconds. Then roll them on the counter to get the most juice out of them!

Ombudsman are a Critical Part of Nursing Home Care

0

For many nursing home residents, someone to talk to is all they need. An ombudsman, a member of a group of volunteer patient advocates who work with nursing home residents, is just that someone.

Deep East Texas Ombudsmen work with 34 nursing facilities throughout the Deep East Texas Region and 14 assisted living facilities. Each volunteer is paired with a facility and visits that facility two hours every week.

Training to become a volunteer ombudsman is provided free of charge by the Area Agency on Aging. Volunteers are mentored on how to speak with residents and handle complaints working at their own pace.

The heart of the program is patient advocacy. Ombudsmen work closely with residents, their families, and the facility to address concerns and problems and advocate for resident’s rights. It’s about getting problems resolved before the State gets involved.

For example, if a resident is complaining about not getting enough water, the ombudsman would discuss this with the administrative staff to correct any substantiated issue. Any issues that cannot be resolved at the local level goes to the state level, those circumstances are rare. Ombudsmen in the Deep East Texas Region resolved 96 percent of complaints received last year. The job of an ombudsman is to make sure the quality of care received is up to standard and every resident has someone who is on their side, and someone who will listen to them and understand where they’re coming from.

Are you concerned about the needs of older people? Can you work with all types of people?  Do you like to follow problems through to resolution? Be a Volunteer Ombudsman. Learn to advocate for people living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities or do you need assistance in solving a problem in a nursing home, contact Tonya Jackson, Managing Local Ombudsman with the Deep East Texas Area Agency on Aging at 1-800-256-6848 x 5326 or 936/634-2247 x 5326.

Angelina County Fair Coming March 20-25, 2023

0

County fairs bring up images of carnivals, livestock, pies, kids, canned goods, and so many other al;sdkjf  images. I have been a part of a county fair since I was a young member of 4-H in Johnson County, Texas.  After being hired as a County Extension Agent, I have been a part of three county fairs. These were in Van Zandt County (Canton, Texas), Tyler County (Woodville, Texas), and, for the past 24 years, Angelina County (Lufkin, Texas).

County Fairs are sometimes called the County “Stock Shows” with their heavy emphasis on the livestock competition.  Growing up, the livestock competitions consisted of the major three larger livestock market species, cattle, sheep, and hogs, as well as chickens, rabbits, and horses.  For the past couple of decades goats have been added to the roster of competitions. Many, many years ago when emus were trying to enter the livestock marketplace, there was an emu show in Canton! I was there to witness it. It was a mess!

In addition to livestock, food competitions are also a staple of the County Fair. All manner of desserts and breads are typically a part of them. Pies, cakes, cookies, and more. Recipes from grandmas compete with the latest recipe from Pinterest for top prizes. A key part of the scoresheet with these food competitions at our local fair s is the interview with the exhibitor. Great tasting food simply will not claim top prize if you cannot also explain to the judges the cost of the dish, discuss preparation techniques, and the nutritive content.

Another competition which is often overlooked is the agricultural mechanic’s show. Those in the know just call it “ag mech”. Here, you’ll find restored tractors alongside newly built farm implements, trailers, bar-b-q pits, and more.

Arts and crafts often make a big showing in Angelina County as well. Paintings and photos hang alongside quilts and woodwork as judges evaluate them in their respective categories.

To be able to compete, youth from across the county typically must be a part of 4-H, FFA, or FCCLA. The ages of kids involved ranges from 3rd graders up through high school for any youth competitions that have a chance to sell their project in the auction.

Expanding further, bar-b-q competitions are becoming a mainstay with teams cooking up beef, pork, and chicken with sides to be evaluated by judges.

This year, our county fair has expanded again to include a shotgun and archery competition.

While those attending from the public may see a county fair as a throwback to more agrarian days, there is a keen driving force for every county fair I’ve known about: the development of the youth involved. There are three key areas that participation in livestock shows has shown important: life skills, development of character, and family relationships.

If you were to look at just how many livestock producers came about from their participation in a county fair, you’d be sorely disappointed. In fact, in all my years of being a part of county fairs, I do not know of a single exhibitor that chose to be a stockman, of any kind, from their participation in the show ring.

Much more importantly, the effort and grit and hard work that these 4-H, FFA, and FCCLA students put into their projects benefits them in a manner that goes beyond any ‘champion’ prize. Families work together, youth learn how to be responsible for a livestock that will enter the food chain, and they all learn about setbacks, difficulties, and (most assuredly) not getting grand champion.

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be highlighting youth of all ages from across Angelina County that are competing in our County Fair. The dates of the Fair are from March 20-25 at the George H Henderson Expo arena.

The Perfect Dinner

0

Having the perfect dinner can change someone’s whole mood in an instant. It can be hard to cook though, the preparation, stirring, and baking can be exhausting. So I have found the perfect, easy, 3-course meal that almost anyone can do.

Appetizer

White queso and chips are the perfect appetizer for any occasion, but how do you make it? Any great meal has an appetizer, so why shouldn’t homemade meals have an appetizer too!

Ingredients:

  • milk
  • a block of white Velveeta cheese
  • 1 can of Rotel

Directions:

  • cut the block of Velveeta into small cubes and put them into a medium size bowl
  • pour 3/4 cup of milk into the bowl with the Velveeta
  • pour a small can of Rotel into the bowl and stir it all together
  • microwave for 5 minutes or until creamy stirring every minute or so

Main Course

I love tacos because of how customizable they are. Whether you are eating with a picky eater, or you are the picky one, you can put whatever you want on your taco. This is perfect to go with your chips and queso. First, you want to start with the meat, it can be grilled chicken, ground beef, or even steak. Once the meat is cooked, set out all your add-ons such as shredded cheese, guacamole, queso, sour cream, onions, tomatoes, and many more.

Dessert

To top off your perfect dinner, you’ll need a perfect dessert. Tres Leches Cake is a signature Mexican dessert that is so delicious, and goes great with any meal! This dessert is a little more complex to make than most desserts, but is so worth it in the end!

What you need:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 5 eggs
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk
  • 1 ½ cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Farenhieght (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. Mix flour and baking powder together and set aside.
  3. Beat sugar and butter together in a large bowl with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs and vanilla to the sugar and beat well.
  5. Add flour mixture to the sugar and eggs about 1/2 cup at a time, mixing until well blended.
  6. Pour batter into the prepared pan.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 30 minutes.
  8. Pierce the cake all over with a fork and let it cool to room temperature.
  9. Mix whole milk, condensed milk, and evaporated milk together in a bowl;
  10. Pour over the top of the cooled cake and allow to soak in.
  11. Whip cream, remaining 1 cup of sugar, and 1 teaspoon vanilla in a chilled glass or metal bowl with an electric mixer until thick.
  12. Spread over the top of the filling. Keep cake refrigerated until serving.

This is the perfect meal for any occasion, whether it’s with friends or with family. Surprise your family or a special someone with a special homemade dinner this month, to show your love to them!

Take a Day to Relax in Hemphill, Texas

0

Hemphill is a great place to go out and have fun for the day on State Highway 87 at the junction of State Highway 184. This quiet and quaint town has local shops, restaurants, bakeries, lakes, and hiking trails, so be sure to check them out! One of the most interesting places there is the old county jail, built in 1903 and used until 1980, is now a museum and library.

If you’re in Hemphill and looking to shop, you have to go to S & B’s Boutique Plus. You can find everything from house decor and dishes to jewelry and clothes! They have a wide variety of options to buy from!

Another good place to drop by and shop in is Lonesome Pine Home, a furniture shop, though they also have some incense and a few other items. Everything that they have is absolutely beautiful!

Last, but certainly not least, is the Wildwood Vagabond, an eco friendly Apothecary Shop. Rachael Sanders, the owner, opened this shop recently. She sells all-natural skincare products, hair care products, and aromatherapy products. Not only that, she is a very kind person!

These are only a few of many places to go in Hemphill. There’s lakes to go admire or fishing in, there’s scenic hiking trails, and so much more to enjoy! I encourage everyone to take a day to relax and have fun in Hemphill, located on State Highway 87 at the junction of State Highway 184. You won’t regret it!

Study reveals warning signs of poor mental health in athletes

0
‘Put down’ language is a key indicator of poor mental health in athletes, recent research shows

More than 400 athletes across a variety of sports, ages and levels of experience were questioned for the study by sports psychology experts from Staffordshire University and Manchester Metropolitan University.

The findings reveal that athletes’ belief systems – specifically irrational beliefs – are related to poorer self-confidence, and in turn, greater competitive anxiety and depressive symptoms.

Phrases that reflect self-depreciating beliefs such as “if I lose, I’m a failure” or “If I face setbacks, it shows how stupid I am” are warning signs, say the authors.

Paul Mansell, Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at Staffordshire University, said: “Despite the psychological benefits of physical activity, studies frequently report poor mental health in athletes, which may be exacerbated by adversities, such as injury, de-selection, and performance pressure.

“We investigated athletes’ beliefs, how they view stress, their levels of self-confidence and put all this data together to work out what might predict psychological wellbeing. We found irrational beliefs to be a core reason for symptoms of poor mental health manifesting in athletes.”

This is the first known study that has examined irrational beliefs, self-confidence, and the psychological wellbeing of athletes all together. Irrational beliefs are extreme, rigid, and illogical ideas that people hold. For example, a person might believe that they “must” get what they want, or that just because they have failed, that they are a “complete failure”.

Dr Martin Turner, from Manchester Metropolitan University, said: “In our recent study, self-depreciation beliefs were found to be the main predictor of low self-confidence. In simple terms, when an athlete put themselves down and uses language like “If I lose, it means I am a failure” it is most damaging and most likely to lead to losses of confidence. This is then likely to have a knock-on effect on performance and wellbeing.

“We can all work to help athletes develop mindsets that help them deal with the challenges of sport and life. By encouraging rational and logical beliefs about performance, we can help athletes to stay healthy amidst the high demands of competitive sport.”

The authors propose Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) as an effective tool for protecting self-confidence. REBT helps athletes to challenge these self-depreciation beliefs and develop beliefs that are more helpful and healthy. For example, rather than believe “I am a failure if I fail”, this might be countered with “failing is not ideal, but it does not mean that I am failure”.

Paul added: “The good news is that irrational beliefs can be challenged and weakened. A coach, teammate or a sports psychologist can listen out for irrational belief phrases and help athletes to counter them. Promoting helpful ‘self-talk’ or imagery can really help to shift somebody’s mindset from being rigid and illogical to being more rational, flexible and healthy.”
