Coping with the Ongoing Cycle of Stress, Life, and Responsibility

0

Oftentimes, I find it a hard thing not to be stressed out about something. Life always seems to find some way to weigh one down with yet another priority. Whether it be to keep a relationship healthy, making ends meet for one’s family, trying to fit in with others, or making enough money to pay bills, the cycle of priorities is seemingly endless.

Growing up, my dad would always tell me about something called…responsibility.

Responsibility is a word I once feared. I despised it, hated it; it was my worst enemy. I was a child at the time of first hearing this, so I didn’t quite understand the true meaning of responsibility and who was fit to take it on.

But now, I see the importance of it. Responsibility is meant for those who are mature enough to take it up.

It settles a man down, and when he decides to fulfill it, he begins to make wise choices. His priorities are set straight, and he becomes narrowly focused on his obligation to tackle things that are important to him; like making monthly payments or providing for his wife and kids.

He finds himself limiting his time with friends, turning down occasions to go to parties or have “fun.” Work becomes his best friend, not that he is a slave to it, but he has become acquiesce to work because that is the means to fulfilling his responsibilities.

These things, in turn, make a man out of him. Because he has realized the true nature of life itself; that is, to work, to reap the benefits, then repeat the process. He knows how good it feels to see the fruit of his hands, to know that success has come, something good has happened, all from the work he has put in. And this satisfies him as a man.

Now, this depiction works when a man fully embraces his responsibility and uses it as fuel to drive him to be successful. But many may find it a heavy burden, and let the weight of it crush them.

According to the American Institute of Stress, 55% of Americans are stressed throughout the day, with those from 18-33 years of age under the most stress.

In an age in which gratification can be achieved instantly, it grows difficult by the day to have patience, to wait for what is wanted. The most impatient among us are the young adults, who are just entering into life–life full of responsibility. They are leaving a world of freedom from stress behind, under the jurisdiction of their parents, to take on (many times blindly) what life has to offer them. That is, managing budgets, committing to serious relationships, or working and showing up to a job that they need to provide for themselves.

The key to finding relief is realizing what is truly important. It is balancing time and developing discipline, knowing what you want and going after it. Taking time away from social media, keeping a good routine, scheduling sleep time, and saying positive affirmations about oneself can make going through everyday life a little bit easier. Surrounding yourself with friends who will build you up and help you grow will provide a sense of relief that you don’t have to go through your struggles alone.

Life can weigh you down, but if you have the determination, the drive, and friends who will be there for you, you can conquer your problems and fulfill your responsibilities.

Three Ways to Spend More Time at a Coffee Shop

0

Do you ever feel like getting out of the house, but want to be cozy at the same time? Coffee shops are the way to go. Coffee shops bring in enjoyment and comfort to the table, which is just what we need going into the new year!

Make Studying Comfortable

Studying can be a stressful task at home. You may get distracted easily by your phone or your pets are just too cute to ignore! Going to a coffee shop can be a new change of pace for some people, it definitely is for me. I personally struggle with ADHD so moving environments are super nice and are really beneficial to me and some of my friends. And it is also an excuse to get a tasty drink while you work hard!

Relaxed Artistry

I have been stopping by my local coffee joint more recently to paint and draw in my sketchbook, and it is absolutely amazing. There are so many possibilities for inspiration! There is an insane amount of diverse people who come in that you could paint or sketch. If you’re into fashion, you could get many ideas on how to wear clothing from other people who may have the same style as you. You never know who will walk through those doors.

Meeting Friends

Meeting up with friends is so much fun and a way to relieve stress, being with the people you love in a lovely environment is healing to the soul. Getting out and socializing is very important to some people, including me. Sitting down with a person you haven’t met in a while over a cup of coffee in a relaxed environment can be enjoyable and may calm the nervous jitters. To meet up with friends and grab some coffee for a couple of hours is another great way to spend time with your loved ones.

Three Ways to Style a Peasant Skirt

0

Tiered peasant skirts are coming back in style. If we’re being honest here, I don’t think they ever left, but that’s a discussion for another day. In this article, we’ve put together three different ways to style a black peasant skirt. Since the skirt has a vintage vibe, we went to Rose Cottage Resale in Lufkin, Texas, to help us pull together these looks.

Style #1

First up is a brown button up shirt over the black skirt. Button-up shirts are a must have when it comes to anything fashion. They can be styled in many ways but today we used the more basic approach.

Style #2

A black skirt is the perfect canvas for a pop of color. This striped shirt makes a great contrast against the dark skirt and shows off that pink purse. It’s just the kind of pop that will make it stand out.

Style #3

This look brings it all back down to earth. The brown on top of the beige shirt is just an excellent finish to the whole outfit. It gives this warm and calm vibe that could match almost any personality.

Choosing outfits can be a fun way to let loose and relax. It’s also a really good way to practice self-love. In my opinion, any outfit you wear is a stellar outfit if it makes you feel comfortable in your own skin. Especially if you like yourself more in that outfit.

How to Make and Keep New Year’s Resolutions

0

New Year’s resolutions are a good way to set mindful goals to better yourself and put expectations for what you want to achieve in the new year. Sometimes making a resolution can be as silly as limiting your intake of ice cream or as serious as taking a step forward and quit smoking. Either way, it is important that we can make and stick with our resolutions. To help you, we’ve got four suggestions to make 2023 the year everything clicked.

Align Resolutions With Habits

According to a blog by RescueTime, only 8% of people achieve their goal of keeping their New Year’s resolutions. In the blog, there are a few scientists who share how making small goals will lead to bigger results.

Your resolutions should align with what you can do, not what you can’t do.

It’s also important that you are able to do your resolutions within your schedule. Bottom line, make resolutions that can be built off of habits you already have. For instance, if you eat desert for dinner, then you can build off of that and trade the sweet stuff for a healthy smoothie.

Get Specific

In an article by SELF, Kelly Mickle and Amy Winderl tell the reader that getting specific with goals can make them more achievable thus leading to lots of celebrations as you achieve those goals. For example, instead of saying “I want to write everyday.” say, “I want to write one paragraph in the span of 5 minutes everyday.” or, “For 30 minutes everyday between 7:30 AM to 8:00 AM.” Then after you’ve achieved making that one paragraph, soak in the success with a sweet treat or that pen you’ve been eyeing.

Don’t Worry If You Miss a Day

Mickle and Winderl also make sure to reassure the reader that its okay if you miss a day! As long as you get back on track as soon as you fall behind, everything will be okay.

Rely on Yourself. And others.

Its a mixed bag. If you rely on others solely for your motivation, then you’re more likely to get off track, especially if you’re relying on them to wake up in the morning to join your morning workout. What if they’re sick or out on vacation? You’d fall behind real fast. So believe in yourself! Internal motivation is a stronger force than external motivation. We may have to flex it a little more in the beginning, but the more you can talk yourself into your morning run, the better and easier it is to talk yourself out of that fifth cookie. However, on the days you fall behind or just can’t believe in yourself, having that support system is a major boost. They can remind you of why you started, help you problem-solve, and encourage you.

Take Baby Steps

In verywellmind’s article, Kendra Cherry expresses that choosing a goal with thought is important when thinking about what you want to do in the new year. To achieve these goals, it would be a good idea to begin your journey with small steps to avoid past mistakes. Suppose that you want to lose weight. Instead of jumping into a workout routine everyday, choose to walk for 20 minutes on a special night. Once that routine is in place, add more time to your workout. This also lets you take your time learning habits or skills. It won’t help you to jump ahead only to stop because you’re frustrated. Doing this allows you to learn and do things better than before as you go along.

Remember, change is a process
that is forever changing.

With these helpful tips, you are set for a brand new year of success. Making and keeping these resolutions is hard but in the end, we are capable of achieving success when we break them down into small, specific steps and the support of our tribe.

Christmas Cactus

0

When I think of a potted plant for the Christmas holidays, I first think of the poinsettia.  We’ll buy one, then let it die, and buy another one next year.

But another potted plant that folks don’t let perish is the Christmas cactus, known scientifically as Schlumbergera.

Originating from coastal mountains of south-eastern Brazil near the Atlantic Ocean, this sub-species of cactus grows in a region which is generally relatively cool, shaded and has high humidity.

Historical records state that it was cultivated in Europe 200 years ago in 1818. They were in the first greenhouses and prized for their fall and winter blooms. By 1852, they had fallen out of favor and most cultivars were lost.

But starting in the 1950’s, breeding resumed in North America, Europe and even Australia and New Zealand.  Without going into extensive progeny and cultivar selections, there are four main cultivar groups in use today.

The flowers range in color from red, yellow, salmon, pink, fuchsia, and white or combinations of those colors.

If you are given a Christmas Cactus, place it in a sunny location indoors. A north or east window gives the ideal light. If you want to grow it indoors in a south or west window, be sure that it gets some shade, even if is from the blinds.

Christmas cactus is easy to grow for most.  The complaints often center on getting it to bloom again. Although warm temperatures are good during the growing season, cool temperatures are important for flowering. Visiting with my mom over Thanksgiving, I noticed hers was blooming.

Christmas Cactus is a succulent plant and can store a reasonable quantity of water in the leaves. However, it is not completely drought tolerant. Water well when the top half of the growing mix feels dry to the touch.

Christmas cactus can be moved outdoors in summer onto a porch or patio but should be kept in a partial to full shaded area. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves. When fall arrives in September, move the plant indoors after making sure no insects are tagging along.

For the fall, place the Christmas cactus in a sunny location. High light intensity is important to flower development.

From October on, keep the plant where temperatures are between 60 to 65 degrees. Keep Christmas cacti away from heat vents, fireplaces, or other sources of hot air. If temperatures remain in this range for a period of six weeks, flower buds will develop.

Once buds form, keep Christmas cactus in the medium to high light it likes and normal home temperatures. When the top of the growing mix dries, water to keep the plant evenly moist. Fertilize Christmas cactus every other week with a half rate of liquid houseplant fertilizer.

Plants that appear unhealthy can be repotted any time of year. Follow up by applying half the recommended rate of a liquid houseplant fertilizer every 2 to 3 weeks.

Lastly, Christmas cactus is relatively easy to propagate in the warmer months of the year and can be a plant that is passed along to others during the holiday season.

Great Ways to Encourage Imagination During Playtime

0

There’s no better time than playtime to encourage an active imagination. Here are a few ways to bring more inventiveness into the fun.

Introduce Toys

Look for toys that allow kids to imagine themselves in new roles and scenarios. For example, little ones can transform into super-duper, fixer-uppers with toys that allow children to “fix” things.

For kids who may have watched older siblings and friends get their game on, another fun toy could be one that allows kids to learn about animals or words. This turns the child’s game time into learning time safely and without worries, while giving young kids an opportunity to feel like big kid gamers.

For kids who have a passion for gardening, give them a few seeds and let them experience the wonder in taking care of something that can grow. Not only is it a good way to teach responsibility, it can also be a good coping mechanism.

Use Creative Prompts

Art is one of the best avenues for the imagination to run free. And when it comes to different forms of art, the sky is limit. Encourage kids to create music, poems, stories, paintings and plays. Feeling stumped? Give them prompts to get them started. Here are a few to try:

• Paint a picture of a beautiful place you want to go.

• Draw a picture of your favorite animal.

• Tell me a story about a kid and their dog.

• Paint a picture of the way you are feeling right now.

• Put on a play about two friends who are lost and trying to find their way home.

With fun role-playing toys and a bit of resourcefulness, you can make the most of playtime by letting imaginations run wild.

Volunteers Help Spread Holiday Hope

Community Donors Help Salvation Army Distribute Gifts to Children in Need

Giving gifts is one of, if not the most defining thing of the Christmas season. But many times, those who go without much get left behind. What the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program has shown through their generous giving is that love is the greatest way to inspire change. Giving to everyone, including those in need, spreads a lot of that love around.

The Salvation Army partnered with various donors to provide gifts to those in need in East Texas as part of their Angel Tree program on Dec. 21, 2022, at the Pitser Garrison Convention Center in Lufkin, Texas.

“It helps provide clothing, toys, food, and even gift certificates to countless families,” said Jennifer Phillips, Captain of Salvation Army Lufkin.

Captain Jennifer Phillips pauses for a photo-op between helping volunteers during gift distribution on Wed., Dec. 21, 2022.

There were thousands of gifts to give out and they helped over 850 kids this year. The Angel Tree Program also provides day shelters, which equip the homeless with hygiene kits, showers, hot meals, and also vouchers, which they give through grocery stores to aid those in need.

Rachel Collins, Branch Manager for the East Texas Food Bank at the Deep East Texas Resource Center, said “It is great because it serves as a one-stop shop so that people won’t have to go to different places for different items and gifts.”

The East Texas Food Bank participated in providing fresh produce and canned foods. Collins also says that this is a community that rallies around the needy.

“We want them to know that they are loved, that we are going to meet them right where they are in life, and that we’ll be happy to do so,” said Collins. “I encourage anyone who is in need to reach out because the resources are here and we’d like to help them overcome their troubles.”

Pastor Jerome Brimmage of First United Methodist Church is another volunteer, who gave out candy canes to help lighten the mood and get in the Christmas spirit. He thinks that volunteering with the Salvation Army is a very powerful way to send a loving message to society as a whole and bases this opportunity on what he believes Jesus taught in the Scriptures.

“Jesus was all about loving God and loving your neighbor. People need to realize that this gift of presents and food is not just a gift, it’s a blessing,” said Pastor Brimmage.

Pastor Jerome Brimmage, left, takes a break from volunteering to speak with TFCL writer Larry Wardlaw Jr.

To sweeten all the blessings, there were even donors from local Christian radio station KSWP 90.9. Sarina Dowlearn, Promotions and Community Outreach Coordinator for KSWP says that “it is the most conspicuous way to spread hope.” She and others with the radio station were passing out stadium cups and offering prayer to those picking up Angel Tree gifts.

“If one wants to really show who Jesus is, simply just spread love, and this is one of the ways to show it,” said Dowlearn.
