Google Assisting to Deliver More Vaccines and Education on Covid-19

0

It’s no doubt that the pandemic has affected communities worldwide. The need for vaccines is a significant focus in our country and Google is now assisting in this journey. Google announced on January 25 they will provide easier access to local pertinent information on where and when to get your vaccine.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google states, “Searches for “vaccines near me” have increased 5x since the beginning of the year and we want to make sure we’re providing locally relevant answers.”

States like Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arizona can expect COVID-19 vaccination locations to be available in the Google Search and Maps. This tool will include details of appointment or referral needed, specific groups available to receive the vaccine, and drive-through options will all be included in your local search.

Information will be gathered from pharmacies, government agencies, and Vaccinefinder.org. Other states and countries can expect this service to be available at a later time.

Google will also provide more than $150 million towards COVID-19 education, accessing vaccine locations, and plans to open spaces to serve as vaccination sites when needed.

Texas HHS Receives National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Grant

0

Texas Health and Human Services today announces it is receiving more than $180,000 in funding toward implementing a new national three-digit dialing code, 988, for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

“The new 988 number makes it easier for people in crisis or emotional distress to get immediate assistance and connect to mental health resources within their communities,” said Sonja Gaines, HHS deputy executive commissioner of Intellectual and Developmental Disability and Behavioral Health Services. “We are excited to get to work, ensuring that Texans who need support can always count on a Lifeline.”

The grant funds will be used to help Texas Lifeline call centers prepare for infrastructure needs and additional callers, purchase headsets and computers, train and educate staff and data collection. The funding comes from Vibrant Emotional Health, the nonprofit administrator of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the 988 State Planning Grant.

Effective July 2022, the new 988 Lifeline will replace 1-800-273-TALK (8255). Federal legislation authorizing 988 as the three-digit code for the Lifeline was passed in October 2020.

HHSC recommends people in crisis and concerned family members continue to call the Lifeline at 800-273-8255 (800-273-TALK) until the 988 number becomes effective.

Praise For Governor Abbott’s Vision For a Freer Texas

0

“Governor Abbott rightly called for Texas to become a ‘Second Amendment Sanctuary State.’ This means stopping local busybodies from taking our federal tax dollars to enforce unpopular federal laws that Congress has no business in making. Amidst skyrocketing crime rates, now is not the time to abridge the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens,” said Derek Cohen, Policy Director of Right On Crime.

“Governor Abbott established a clear, conservative agenda for the 87th Legislature. These priorities will ensure that Texas continues to be a leader in education, health care, reducing government regulation, preserving free-market principles, and protecting our most vulnerable citizens. These policy priorities guarantee that Texas will emerge from this pandemic stronger than ever. We are grateful for Governor Abbott’s leadership and look forward to working alongside Members of the Texas House and Senate to ensure the success of these priorities,” said the Texas Conservative Coalition Research Institute.

“The Human Coalition applauds Governor Abbott for his powerful remarks about ending abortion in his State of the State speech this evening, saying ‘More than 40 million babies lost their lives to abortion in 2020. That’s shocking. It’s horrifying. It must end,” said the Human Coalition.

“We are energized by Governor Abbott’s strong pro-life leadership and thank him for all he has done to advance pro-life policies in Texas. Recipient of the SBA List 2016 Distinguished Leader Award, Governor Abbott is a proven leader for our cause who has signed 11 pro-life laws that save lives. We look forward to seeing more legislation in the state that will protect babies from lethal discrimination in the womb, as these children are under particular threat from the abortion industry. Texas is a pro-life state that rejects this modern-day eugenicist practice,” said Susan B. Anthony List State Policy Director Sue Liebel.

Advocates Praise Governor Abbott’s Vision For A More Prosperous Texas

“The Texas Restaurant Association applauds our state’s leaders for prioritizing pandemic liability protections for businesses – like local restaurants – that are going above and beyond to keep their customers and employees safe. COVID-19 has devastated the restaurant industry, but with tools like liability protections, we can work together to ensure the Texas economy recovers stronger than ever,” said Dr. Emily Knight, CEO of the Texas Restaurants Association.

“Governor Abbott clearly understands the challenges facing the state’s small businesses in these difficult times. Our members are especially relieved by the governor’s support for COVID-19 liability protections for small businesses. Bad actors should be held accountable, but businesses that follow the government’s safety guideless to protect their customers and employees from the coronavirus should be protected from predatory trial lawyers trying to profit from the pandemic. We’re also encouraged by the governor’s support for easing the regulatory burdens on small businesses,” said National Federation of Independent Business State Director Annie Spillman.

“Governor Abbott is leading with an agenda that will foster economic growth and allow opportunities for individual Texans to flourish. This agenda will help the Texas economy continue to recover by removing regulations that stifle job creation and by keeping business decisions with businesses, rather than government. Given the uncertainty facing businesses and employees, we are also encouraged by the Governor’s emphasis on preparing workers to meet the demands of our dynamic Texas economy. We look forward to working with Governor Abbott and legislators from both parties to advance the sensible, pro-growth priorities the Governor has articulated,” said the Alliance for Securing and Strengthening the Economy in Texas.

“The Texas Association of Builders applaud the efforts of Governor Abbott in keeping our state and its citizens open for business during the COVID-19 pandemic that has allowed our members to continue to safely build and repair homes across the state.  As outlined in tonight’s address, we appreciate his ongoing commitment to maintaining our state’s healthy business and jobs climate that continues to be the envy of the nation.  We look forward to working with the Governor, Lt. Governor, Speaker of the House and all the members of the 87th Texas Legislature to ensure that future housing affordability remains a top priority as our members work to address the housing needs of all Texans,” said M. Scott Norman, Jr., Executive Director of the Texas Association of Builders.

“Governor Greg Abbott’s State of the State address today shows, once again, that he is committed to growing the Texas economy. We should all be encouraged today that Texas has a path forward to not just recover, but thrive, as the nation recovers from the COVID-19 Pandemic. The electric industry is the backbone of Texas’ economic growth, providing reliable, affordable electricity to residents and businesses throughout the state, and we’re proud to do our part, to keep Texas open for business,” said J.P. Urban, Senior Vice President and Acting CEO of the Association of Electric Companies of Texas.

Law Enforcement Leaders Praise Governor Abbott’s Vision For A Safer Texas

0

“By prioritizing public safety in the 87th legislative session, Governor Abbott is sending a loud and clear message that Texas will always be a law-and-order state. His efforts to stop defunding will ensure that the men and women in law enforcement have the tools and resources needed to keep Texans safe. And his initiative to combat revolving door bail policies will stop violent criminals from being released to further victimize our communities. I am committed to working hand in hand with Governor Abbott to implement these critical initiatives and keep our communities safe. God bless Texas,” said Manny R. Ramirez, President, Fort Worth Police Officers Association.

“On behalf of over 30,000 peace officers, we extend immense gratitude to Governor Abbott. It has become harder than ever to be a peace officer, yet Governor Abbott has not turned his back on law enforcement. He has stood for law and order and has met improvident police reform bills with strong conviction, ensuring that public safety remains a priority in our Great State. TMPA is proud to work with The Governor to create sensible public policy that will further professionalize law enforcement in Texas,” said Kevin Lawrence, Executive Director of the Texas Municipal Police Association.

“At a time when so many elected officials are pandering to the anti-police, anti-public safety protesters, Governor Greg Abbott is showing courage and leadership in supporting law enforcement across Texas. His priorities this session send the right message – all police officers deserve the support, funding and training to make sure all families in every part of Texas have safe neighborhoods to live, raise a family or enjoy retirement,” said Frederick Frazier, First Vice President of the Dallas Police Association and State Legislative Director of the Texas Fraternal Order of Police.

“Governor Greg Abbott continues to lead the way for Texans promoting strong public safety measures. The officers of the Austin Police Department experienced firsthand how he was willing to honor his word and bring resources to Austin during the riots this summer to address the civil disorder.  He boosted our officer’s morale with his leadership in taking on the misguided defunding of our Department by the Austin City Council. I know we have a strong leader in Governor Abbott who is willing to tackle issues like bail reform, defunding of police services, and providing for the training, equipment, and protections for our brave officers who are proudly serving our community.  We are fortunate to have Governor Abbott’s continued support,” said Ken Casaday, President of the Austin Police Association.

“CLEAT acknowledges the law enforcement profession is under attack from all directions as we enter the 87th legislative session. We are very concerned for the public’s safety as some politicians seek to normalize criminal behavior while blaming the working people of law enforcement. CLEAT will continue to focus on officer working conditions, continuing our work to raise professional standards and maintaining the public’s trust. Texas has lost over 85 officers in the line of duty to Covid19. CLEAT has been at the forefront of the issue since the beginning of the pandemic and we have gained bi-partisan support on legislation that would include Covid19 as a presumptive illness for all Texas first responders. We look forward to working with Governor Abbott on this important issue in conjunction with all legislation that improves the profession and lives of law enforcement and their families,” said Charley Wilkison, Executive Director of Combined Law Enforcement Associations Of Texas.

EXPANSION OF BROADBAND DEEMED EMERGENCY ITEM BY GOVERNOR ABBOTT

0

Tonight, in his biennial address to outline priorities for the Legislative Session, Governor Greg Abbott announced that increasing access to broadband services would be an Emergency Item. Broadband – which the Governor noted is no longer a luxury, but an essential tool – is one of five Emergency Items that will be eligible for the Legislature’s consideration within the first sixty days of the 87th Legislative Session.

“Over the last several months our offices have been working with stakeholders, from internet service providers to non-profit organizations, to identify the most efficient and effective path to expand access to broadband in Texas,” said Ashby. “Now, the Governor has given the Legislature the ‘green-light’ to get working on this critical issue, and I look forward to working with leadership to expand access and encourage adoption of broadband service to all hard-working Texans.”

In recognition of this need across the state, Senator Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville) and Representative Trent Ashby (R-Lufkin) last week filed Senate Bill 506 and House Bill 1446. The two bills, identical versions of one another, aim to expand access to critical broadband services by: forming a state broadband office, creating a comprehensive state broadband plan, identifying which areas of the state have the greatest need, and funding projects to increase access and adoption in those areas.

“As we’ve seen throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, access to the internet is absolutely essential to the citizens of our already thriving state,” said Nichols. “Our massive, diverse economy has already propelled Texas as the top state for business over the last sixteen years, and bridging the digital divide with expanded access to broadband in rural areas will increase opportunities for high-quality healthcare, educational attainment, and economic development opportunities.”

Since first being elected in 2014, Governor Abbott has given four States of the State. Nearly every item the Governor has prioritized for the Legislature has gone on to receive his signature, including: increased border security funding, reformation of Child Protective Services, and last session’s historic overhaul of the system that funds public schools in Texas. Aside from increasing access to broadband, other Emergency Items for the current session include: ensuring that no cities defund the police, fixing the flawed bail system to keep dangerous criminals off the streets, restoring trust and confidence in our elections, and protecting Texas businesses who operated during the pandemic from frivolous lawsuits.

Nichols was first elected to the Texas Senate in 2007 and represents 18 counties across East Texas and part of Montgomery County. Ashby is in his fifth term as a member of the Texas House of Representatives, and currently represents Angelina, Houston, Leon, Madison, San Augustine, and Trinity Counties.

Governor Abbott, HHSC Announce Extension of Emergency SNAP Benefits for February 2021

0

Governor Greg Abbott today announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) will provide approximately $300 million in emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food benefits for the month of February as the state continues its response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are grateful for this additional extension of emergency SNAP benefits for the month of February,” said Governor Abbott. “We will continue to provide Texas families with the resources they need to put food on the table and provide for their loved ones.”

“These emergency food benefits will provide additional support for Texans to purchase nutritious foods for their families during the ongoing pandemic,” said Texas HHS Access and Eligibility Services Deputy Executive Commissioner Wayne Salter.

HHSC received federal approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to extend the maximum, allowable amount of SNAP benefits to recipients based on family size. The emergency February allotments are in addition to the more than $2 billion in benefits previously provided to Texans since April 2020.

Recipients will also continue to receive a 15 percent increase in their total benefits, which will continue monthly until June 2021. This additional 15 percent increase and the emergency allotment amount should appear in recipients’ accounts by Feb. 28.

Administered by HHSC, SNAP is a federal program that provides food assistance to approximately 1.6 million eligible low-income families and individuals in Texas.

Texans in need can apply for benefits, including SNAP and Medicaid, at YourTexasBenefits.com or use the Your Texas Benefits mobile app to manage their benefits.

Runner-Up Cooper Davis Shoots to World No. 1 at PBR Unleash the Beast Event in Okeechobee, Fla

Cooper Davis of Jasper, Texas, the 2016 PBR World Champion, rode all three of his bulls on the weekend for a second-place finish and vaulted to world No. 1 at the Elite PBR Unleash the Beast held at the Agri-Civic Center in Okeechobee, Fla on January 31, 2021.

Colten Fritzlan of Rifle, Colorado was a picture of perfection, going a flawless 3-for-3 to win the American Roots Edition’s PBR Coors Banquet Invitational at the Agri-Civic Center.

While Fritzlan’s score propelled him to the top of the leaderboard, Davis had yet to attempt his final round selection.

Davis entered the final round No. 1 in the event aggregate after covering Stretch (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Heald Pro Bulls) for 87.5 points in Round 1 and Sun Country (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/WSM Auctioneers) for 86 points in Round 2.

With the first pick in the championship round bull draft, Davis quickly chose Speed Demon (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Heald Pro Bulls), who he had covered five times in six previous attempts, marked in excess of 90 points in four of his qualified rides.

After matching Speed Demon jump-for-jump in Okeechobee, Davis was desperately hanging off the left side of the bull for the last two seconds of the out, which was put under review to determine if he had reached the 8-second whistle.

While Davis was awarded a qualified ride, his efforts didn’t prove enough; he needed an 86.75-point score or higher and was only marked 84.75 points due to lacking control in the ride’s final seconds, leading to a second-place finish.

Fritzlan’s victory netted him 125 world points and a check for $23,996.73. He is now ranked No. 5 in the world, 114 points behind No. 1 Davis.

Davis’ runner-up effort propelled him to the top of the world rankings for the first time in 2021, garnering him 95 world points and $15,713.87.

The stoic Texan also collected an additional 46.5 world points Saturday night by finishing second in the 15/15 Bucking Battle. He tied for the silver finish courtesy of his 91.25-point trip on the current No. 1-ranked bull Ridin Solo (Cord McCoy/Bill McCarty) in the special round.

Attempting to become the seventh multi-time PBR World Champion in 2021, Davis now leads No. 2 Junior Patrik Souza (Sonora, Brazil) by 71 points.

Fans can relive all the action from PBR Unleash The Beast: American Roots Edition’s Coors Banquet Invitational on Monday, February 1 at 8:00 a.m. ET on RidePass, available on RidePass.com or via the mobile app.

Following a one-week break, the PBR Unleash the Beast: American Roots Edition next travels to Del Rio, Texas, and the Val Verde County Fairgrounds for the PBR Del Rio Invitational. The event will be on Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14 at 2:00 p.m. CT.
