There were so many moments late in Wednesday’s game when the Angelina College Roadrunners seemed on the verge of another upset of a nationally ranked team.

Twice in the final three minutes the ‘Runners closed to within two points, managing to get off three pointers that would have given AC a late lead.

None of those potential go-ahead buckets would fall, however, and the Roadrunners came up short in an 82-74 loss to No. 23 McLennan Community College Wednesday night at Shands Gymnasium.

The Highlanders went 6-of-6 from the free-throw line in the final 90 seconds to hold off the stubborn Roadrunners and stay unbeaten on the season at 5-0.

Gilbert Thomas scored 17 points to lead AC before picking up his fifth foul late. Mario Goggins added 15 points and Bryan Mitchell 10 in the loss.

McLennan got 16 points from Jashawn Talton and 15 each from Antoine Banks and Sasa Vuksanavic.

The Roadrunners (3-2) will play at Arkansas Baptist on Tuesday. Game time is 7 p.m.

Every Lady Roadrunner who suited up for the game made her way into the scorebook, and Angelina College needed every bit of those contributions in exacting a little revenge in Wednesday’s 80-71 win over McLennan Community College at Shands Gymnasium.

Exactly one week after dropping an 88-82 decision to the Highlassies in Waco, the Lady ‘Runners put forth a solid team effort in AC’s second win of the season.

Mia Williams scored 17 points to lead the Lady Roadrunners, connecting on five three pointers for the night. Natasha Mack added 13 points, 15 rebounds and six blocked shots; and Angelica Darcus finished with 11 points in the win.

Jaylonn Walker led the Highlassies with 20 points. Velma Mitchell added 16.

AC never trailed in the game, leading by as many as 21 points in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Roadrunners (2-2) will travel to Tyler this weekend as participants in the Tyler Classic. AC faces Collin County at 1 p.m. on Friday and Ranger College at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The Angelina College Lady Roadrunners get a rematch in their home opener, while the Roadrunners square off against yet another nationally ranked team as both AC teams host a doubleheader against McLennan College Wednesday at Shands Gymnasium.

The Lady ‘Runners finally get the opportunity to face a home crowd after having opened the season with three straight road games – all against tough competition. AC’s ladies will on Wednesday get a rematch with the 3-0 Highlassies, who handed AC an 88-62 loss in the season opener in Waco back on Nov. 1. Since then, the Lady Roadrunners have beaten No. 17 Northeastern Oklahoma A&M 68-56 and lost a 59-48 battle to No. 7 Tallahassee College.

Wednesday’s game will also serve as a homecoming of sorts for local products Natasha Mack and Diamond Johnson (Lufkin High School) and Mia Williams of Diboll.

The Roadrunners are riding high after Sunday’s 82-69 win over No. 3 South Plains College in the East/West Challenge in Lewisville. Deedy Gauno lit up the scoreboard with 28 points – all in the second half – in the win. Kevin Norman scored 14 points, Isaac Beal added 11 points and Gilbert Thomas just missed out on a double-double with eight points and 13 rebounds.

“This was our first game with Antoine Hailey and Jay Head in the lineup, and they did a great job,” Manary said afterward. “We flat-out guarded well on defense and were patient on offense.

“Hailey and Nylek Cobb really stood out in denying their best player all game long,” Manary added. “Gilbert was a man on the boards and in making all the hustle plays. It was just great team win for our guys.”

On Wednesday, the ‘Runners face yet another highly regarded squad in the No. 23 McLennan College Highlanders, a team averaging 108.7 points over its first four wins.

Game times at Shands Gymnasium are 5:30 p.m. for the Lady Roadrunners and 7:30 p.m. for the Roadrunners.

Angelina College’s Josue Salazar was inches – and four seconds – away from notching a hat trick for the Roadrunners.

Instead, Laredo College keeper Gonzalo Santa managed to edge Salazar away from what would have been the game-tying header, sealing a 3-2 win for the Palominos, the third-place team in Region XIV, Saturday at Jase Magers Field in Lufkin.

The loss marked the eighth Roadrunner defeat this season by two goals or fewer.

The ending capped a thriller featuring a defensive battle in the first half followed by second-half fireworks. Neither team could break through over the first 45 minutes, leaving the match in a scoreless draw at the break.

Laredo changed the scoreless status just 90 seconds into the second half: Palomino Rodave Murray worked his way around AC defenders to score his first of two goals.

The Roadrunners nearly answered 30 seconds later when Santiago Maya’s shot attempt from inside the box – and in front of an open net – glanced off the top of his foot.

Laredo’s Murray headed home his second score in the 54th minute for the 2-0 Laredo lead. AC’s Salazar got the ‘Runners on the board by winning a header in the box, but Laredo answered three minutes later, with Murray having a hand in the score. His shot attempt in the 59th minute deflected back to teammate Tedi Lesi, who knocked it home.

Salazar brought AC to within a goal at 3-2 with a left-footer from distance, and the Roadrunners mounted a furious charge in the game’s final minutes, only to come up short.

The Roadrunners will host their home finale Tuesday night against Jacksonville as part of a women’s/men’s doubleheader. The Lady Roadrunners kick off at 5:30 and the Roadrunners at 7:30. Both AC teams will celebrate Sophomore Night festivities prior to each game.
