Angelina College will host the third annual “Holiday, Hope, & Honor” concert Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Temple Theater. The concert features the AC Chorale and the East Texas Praise Symphony. Tickets are $4 for adults and $3 for seniors, students and children.
The concert is a salute to US troops and veterans as well as a celebration of the holiday season. Donations for the Veteran’s Administration sock closet will be accepted at the event. The program includes a variety of patriotic and holiday selections such as “Here’s to the Military,” “Stars and Stripes Forever,” “Silent Night” and “O Holy Night.”

An action-packed holiday weekend of basketball saved its best game for last, with the Angelina College Roadrunners pulling off an 81-75 upset of No. 9 Odessa College in Saturday’s finale of the Guy Davis Thanksgiving Classic at Shands Gymnasium.
Corinthian Ramsey hit a fall away three pointer to beat the shot clock with 42 seconds to play, Quenton Bush grabbed a huge defensive rebound with 32 ticks showing and Trent Brinkley hit Isaiah Bailey with an outlet leading to a dunk at the buzzer to give first-year head coach Kyle Manary his biggest win of his AC career.

With the score knotted at 75 with a minute to play, Ramsey found himself scrambling for a loose ball with the shot clock nearing zeroes. The sophomore guard fell back from two defenders and hit the eventual game winner, giving him a team-high 21 points for the night.
To pull off the upset, the Roadrunners had to overcome a 17-point, first-half deficit and a 25-point, 12-rebound night from the Wranglers’ Tyree Robinson, a New Mexico State University signee.
AC’s Gary Blackston finished with 18 points, Bailey added 17 and Robert Lewis 14 to lift the Roadrunners to their fourth straight win.
In the day’s earlier action, Panola College outlasted Southwestern Christian College 98-90, winning in overtime after SWCC’s Jhase Davis hit a three at the buzzer signaling the end of regulation.
The Roadrunners (8-2) will open conference play at home on Wednesday against Kilgore College as part of an AC doubleheader. It was as if the Angelina College Roadrunners found a switch reading “Defense” and switched it on long enough to fuel a big home win.
AC forced six turnovers leading to a 17-0 second-half run in taking down the Southwestern Christian College Rams 91-79 in Friday’s first day of the Guy Davis Thanksgiving Classic at Shands Gymnasium.

The Roadrunners’ Shaq Gainey forced three of those turnovers, helping AC rally from seven points down to take their final lead. Vic Bell turned in a pair of big defensive plays, altering Rams shots and grabbing the defensive boards to help extend the run.
Isaiah Bailey led AC with 28 points, followed by Corinthian Ramsey with 18, Gary Blackston with 17 and Gainey with 13. Ramsey and Gainey combined to go 7-for-7 from three-point range in the first half. Rontrell Hills and Joseph Mitchell each scored 18 points for the Rams; Jontavius Littles added another 17 points.
In the day’s earlier action, No. 8 Odessa edged Panola College 73-70 when Sammy Barnes-Thompkins sealed the win with a pair of free throws with 11 seconds to play. Panola’s Tyonte Robertson just missed a game-time desperation heave at the buzzer to allow the Wranglers to survive.

People frequently ask me what I eat, so I thought I would share. Let me preface this by saying, this is what works for ME. You may be different. I don’t count anything – not calories, grams, macros. Nada. Numbers burden me. Not because I’m lazy, but numbers are bondage to me. It’s the same reason I don’t weigh myself. As someone who suffered from disordered eating and body image issues in college, I will not go back to that way of life. Freedom is my new boo.
My diet mainly consists of veggies, fruits, lean dairy, whole grains, nuts, poultry, lean beef, fish, and eggs. I tell people that I aim for 90 percent healthy (foods I just mentioned) and 10 percent whatever I want (chocolate, wine, French bread…I’m of French decent, so those three things are just natural, right?).
A typical day for me would be something like this:

Breakfast is often Banana Pancakes. If I’m teaching classes that morning, I’ll throw a scoop of protein powder in the recipe. Yummy and filling. Oh, and coffee is a must for me in the morning. It’s what I look forward to the most!
Mid-morning (usually after my workout) I’ll typically eat a Quest bar because I’m usually on the run and need something quick and easy.
Lunch is often a big green salad with chicken and nuts or another favorite is Chicken Avocado Mash. I’ll mash an avocado and mix in chicken, purple onion, a squeeze of lime, and salt and pepper. I like to eat that with some Beanitos bean chips. I might have fruit for dessert or if I need a chocolate fix, a Skinny Cow Ice Cream treat, or a few squares of dark chocolate. I usually eat my “treat” at lunch not dinner time.
Mid-afternoon snack is often plain Greek yogurt with fresh berries mixed in for extra yum. If I need a more substantial snack, I’ll throw some almonds into this.

Dinner I do not load up at dinner. It’s usually smaller than my lunch, but enough to keep me full until bed. I don’t like to eat after dinner. Some people do better having another snack after dinner, but I’m not into that. Dinner for me is usually a protein, a starch, and lots of greens (think chicken or fish, brown rice and a green salad).
I try to continually drink water throughout my day. I don’t drink diet sodas or iced tea. It’s coffee in the morning and water the rest of the day. I might drink some almond milk at breakfast on occasion. I take calcium supplements since I don’t drink a lot of milk.
Also, we don’t go out to eat much. My hubby and I will have a couple date nights each month and our family may go out after church on Sunday here and there, but we prefer to eat at home. I do go on lunch dates with girlfriends several times a month, but I try to eat something similar to what I would make at home. Eating out can be a healthy diet killer, so be careful. It also saves our family a lot of money to cook each night and that makes the hubs happy!
So, that’s a typical day. I never go hungry. If I’m hungry, I eat. It’s pretty simple. The way I eat keeps me happy and satisfied. I enjoy my food and don’t feel deprived. I splurge here and there, and don’t think twice about it. If your diet is healthy and portion controlled most of the time, the occasional splurge won’t hurt.

Great things are happening at the Nacogdoches Railroad Depot this holiday season!
Back by popular demand for the 6th year, the City of Nacogdoches Historic Sites Department is proud to host the Loblolly Model Train Display, which started the Friday after Thanksgiving.
The Loblolly Model Train Display will be open for public viewing at the historic Nacogdoches Railroad Depot for three weekends this holiday season beginning Friday, November 25th.
The display has been a huge success in the past, drawing in over 200 people per weekend, and we are ecstatic to have them back again. The Loblolly Model Train display is a very unique one; not only is it billed as the only traveling 3-rail, O-gauge, railroad display between Shreveport, Dallas and Houston, they are also one of the only groups that chose to have their display at table top height with no ropes. This encourages youngsters to get up close and experience the fun and excitement of toy trains.
Their schedule is: November 25th – 27th, December 2nd – 4th, and December 9th – 11th. The Depot will be open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. for all to enjoy.

The Lufkin Rotary Club is hosting their 60th annual Waffle Bake fundraiser from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29, through Thursday, Dec. 1, at the Angelina College Cafeteria.
Advance tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for children and can be purchased at Austin State Bank on John Redditt Drive. Tickets can be purchased at the door and will be $5 for adults and $3 for children.
Proceeds benefit the Lufkin Rotary Club, the local chapter of a national service organization with more than 1.2 million members. The Lufkin Rotary chapter meets at 12:05 p.m. every Monday at the Lufkin First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. The meeting is open to the public and consists of lunch and special speakers.
Grab a bottle of beard oil, drop a dime size amount into the palm of your hand, apply to your beard, and work in well.
Those are the directions Wade Barbe, owner of Lufkin Beard Company, tells beard groomers when they use his 100 percent natural, locally made beard oils.
“Put a dime size amount in your hand, scrub it between your hands, and rub it into your beard,” he said. “A little goes a long ways, so start out with a little.”

Beginning last May, Barbe said he wanted to create something that “was a little more reasonable priced, something that was all-natural,” plus he wanted to create a product locally made. Along with beard oils, he creates soaps and balms at home.
“Whenever I really started, I did a ton of research on essential oils and ratios,” Barbe said. “I sat down and started doing the scents. I will have an idea of a scent, like a woodsy scent, but then you have to sit down and experiment and get your ratios correct.
“So the oils consist of a carrier oil and then I use pure essential oils for scents, you just have to get your ratios right,” he added. “You don’t want it to be so overpowering where it gives someone a headache. I like more of the subtle smells.”
Barbe currently sells four beard oils: Spiced Citrus, a spice, citrus scent; Days End, a woodsy, citrus, lavender scent; No. 1, a woodsy, mint, and coffee scent; and Piney, a pine, woodsy scent. The oils are $15 for one ounce. Other products such as beard palm, hand salve, and beard care start packs range from $12-$20.

“It’s cool that people would come out and spend their money that they worked for on something I made,” Barbe said. “It means a lot to me. It makes me proud of that, for sure.”
As he builds his business, one example Barbe looks to is the owner of The Pizza Place in Weatherford, who takes a personal touch with his customers.
“The owner would come out and say ‘How is your food today? Do you like it? I really thank you for your business,’” Barbe said. “I thought that was so cool. It makes you feel so appreciated, that he really cares that you’re there. That’s the way I want it to be with my stuff.
Barbe advises new business owners to have patience.
“It really is a lot of work when you own your own business; it’s really a 24-hour job. You’re constantly, constantly working,” Barbe said. “Be willing to put in the work. Nobody’s going to care about your business as much as you are; nobody’s going to be willing to work at your business as hard as you are. Be diligent and be consistent.
Owner Wade Barbe adds uplifting messages to each product package to add a personal touch.
“It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s rewarding, too. When you see people try your product, and they like it, that means something,” he added. “I’m really grateful for my customers, either if they buy one thing or a bunch of stuff, I think every customer matters.
Lufkin Beard products are currently available in Bloom, a local shop in Angelina County Farmers Market. Barbe said his goal is to add more products to several stores in Lufkin and Nacogdoches, with plans to grow to Jacksonville, Tyler, and Longview.
“I’m a huge supporter of the local community. When people buy local it really does matter,” Barbe said. “That’s why I wanted local beeswax; I think it means more when people from this area use your products, and their using balm and it has beeswax that is from this area. I think it means more than if you bought it online and its coming from no telling where.”
