District Begins Treating Roads Ahead of Freezing Weather

Date:

LUFKIN – Crews are scheduled to begin Monday, Feb. 17, to pre-treat major roadways through the Lufkin District, with maintenance crews beginning shift work to monitor the roadways through Tuesday night.

A brine treatment discourages precipitation from freezing and sticking to pavement, and will be applied to US 59 and other major roadways, major structures, bridges, and overpasses.

“The district is preparing for freezing winter weather following predicted rainfall next week, and crews are prepared to work to keep the roadways clear if the weather materializes,” said Rhonda Oaks, public information officer. “Crews will be in shift work throughout the night Tuesday into Wednesday monitoring the roads and will retreat with brine, if necessary.

Motorists are advised to reduce speed as they approach TxDOT crews placing brine on the roadways, as they work to prepare for the winter weather event.
