Lufkin’s Grandough Bakery- National Chocolate Cake Day!

0

In honor of National Chocolate Cake Day, Texas Forest Country Living has found a delicious feature from The Grandough Bakery, right here in Lufkin, Texas:

“Chocolate Madness,” by Justin Kezar

Justin Kezar who started Grandough in 2010, calls this their “Chocolate Madness,” or “Death by Chocolate” cake. Kezar describes this as a chocolate, 3-layer buttercream cake topped with dark chocolate ganache, chocolate candies, curls, and macaroons. He also tells us that they made this tasty looking creation as part of a fundraiser event for the Pregnancy Help Center of Lufkin.

Voted “Best of the Best” by weddingandpartynetwork.com, Justin and his wife Teresa both run Grandough down in south Lufkin on the corner of Feagin Dr. and the loop and have concocted hundreds of tasty deserts such as this.

The Piney Woods Fine Arts Association of Crockett, Texas will once again be hosting Asleep at the Wheel; A country-western swing sensation of the 1970’s at the Crockett Civic Center.

Having produced hits such as “The Letter that Johnny Walker Read,” “Hot Rod Lincoln,” and “Miles and Miles of Texas,” Asleep at the Wheel played a huge roll in bringing popularity to the country movement during the days of rock.

A frequent guest of the PWFAA, Asleep at the Wheel was widely considered one of the best shows in country music in the 1970’s and still continue to turn out new music- Their most recent album being New Routes, which just released in 2018.

Ann Walker, Executive Director of the PWFAA is excited to help share The Wheel’s talents with East Texas once again:

“Piney Woods Fine Arts Association is thrilled to have Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel return to Crockett.  They have played for us twice in the past and are just as popular, if not more so, than they were then.  This is their 50th anniversary tour.  In today’s world, it’s hard to believe that a band can sustain with such a devoted fan base for so long.  It’s going to be a full crowd with fun music!  They are definitely keeping Western Swing music alive!”

The show is scheduled for 7:30 at the Crockett Civic Center. Tickets are available at https://pwfaa.showare.com/, and the show is sure to be worth the trip.

Roadrunners Hosting Lee College on Saturday AC Head Coach Wade Facing Former Mentor

Just having the first- and second-place teams in Region XIV’s South Zone facing off would be plenty of reason to want to see Saturday’s basketball game.

But for Angelina College Roadrunner head coach Nick Wade, the game will carry even more meaning. He gets an opportunity to show his former mentor just how much he’s learned in his two years at the helm at AC.

The Roadrunners will host Lee College, where Wade served three years as an assistant coach under long-time Rebel head coach Roy Champagne. Over those three seasons, Wade helped Lee College to its best win totals in school history, a conference championship in 2013 and a spot in the national tournament’s Sweet 16.

And while Wade admits to still holding a soft spot for his former program, he stresses that for at least a short time on Saturday, those feelings won’t matter.

“For 40 minutes, we’ll be sworn enemies,” Wade laughed. “But Coach Champagne treats me like I’m one of his own, and I’m so indebted and grateful that he allowed me to get into this business and in this region, and I’m really excited to compete against him.

“It’s always nice to compete against family, and Coach Champagne has his guys playing at a high level right now. Games like this are why you want to play and coach in Region XIV.”

The Roadrunners are coming off a real thriller played Wednesday night in Port Arthur. AC’s Travis Henson managed a tip-in off a miss just in time to beat the buzzer, staving off overtime and lifting the ‘Runners (12-8, 8-2) to their fourth straight win in league play.

“Travis tipped it in, and credit to him for continuing to compete instead of just watching the ball,” Wade said of the big play. “There are a lot of things, even on that last-second play, that we can clean up, but the guys did a great job just finishing the game.

“It’s always tough to win on the road in Region XIV, but we were able to find a way to do it. It wasn’t pretty, but I’m really proud of my guys for finishing the job.”

Saturday’s game against the Rebels (14-7, 5-5) tips off at 4 p.m. at Shands Gymnasium. Live streaming is available at angelinaathletics.com.

Admission to the game is free, with donations accepted at the door.

01.23.20 MOVE OVER, SLOW DOWN

MOVE OVER, SLOW DOWN: At 5:02 a.m., Officer Cody Deal responded to a two-vehicle, no-injury accident on U.S. 59 south at the intersection of Southwood Drive. While Officer Deal was waiting on a wrecker, a man involved in the accident asked him how often secondary crashes occur while accidents are being worked. Officer Deal told him about Officer Seth Thompson's accident last year. He went on to note that secondary accidents occur all the time in other areas, but thankfully not very often here in Lufkin. Less than five minutes later, a southbound Dodge truck slammed into the back of Deal's Tahoe. The Tahoe was knocked 50 feet into a wrecker that had just arrived on the scene. The driver of the truck said he was distracted by a vehicle being cleared from the northbound side of U.S. 59 and did not see that the southbound side was partially blocked. Thankfully he and his passenger were not injured nor were Officer Deal, the wrecker driver (who was out of the truck already) or the man seen in the video. We're releasing this video to bring awareness and remind everyone to MOVE OVER, SLOW DOWN for first responders. #moveoverslowdown #everyonewenthome

Ladyjacks Seek Fourth-Straight at Home Against Northwestern State

0

Stephen F. Austin’s Ladyjack Basketball (13-3, 6-1 SLC) returns home tonight to William R. Johnson Coliseum as the Northwestern State Lady Demons (5-11, 2-5 SLC) look to gain their first road win of the season.

Looking to extend their win streak to four, the Ladyjacks currently rank in the top 30 nationally in scoring margin (19.1 points per game), scoring defense (54.0), rebound margin (9.1), steals per game (10.8), and assists per game (17.1). SFA’s Aiyana Johnson was named the Southland Conference Player of the Week after propelling the Ladyjacks to two home wins last week, including a 102-41 dismantling of Central Arkansas, who at the time touted the 12th-ranked best scoring defense in the nation. Through the week Johnson averaged 12.5 points from the field and a 58.8 field goal percentage- Boosting her overall percentage to a respectable .561- Good for second in the conference overall.

Still feeling the sting of a three point loss on the road to New Orleans on January 4th, the Ladyjacks are currently one game back from first in the conference and looking to stay in the race with games on the road at Lamar (8-9, 4-4 SLC) this Saturday and next Wednesday at home against Abilene Christian (13-2, 5-1 SLC), before an all-important showdown in Huntsville against the conference-leading Sam Houston (13-4, 8-0) next Saturday. Tip-off at William R. Johnson is scheduled for tonight at 6:30pm.

This past Saturday, the Angelina College Lady Roadrunners helped break out of a five-way tie for third place in the Region XIV conference standings with a convincing 76-61 win over Paris College.

On Wednesday, the Lady ‘Runners get a shot to gain sole possession of the third spot.

AC’s ladies will host Blinn College, and both teams are carrying identical 4-3 records in league play. The Lady Bucs at 15-4 have the better overall record, with the Lady ‘Runners sitting at 12-6.

AC won Saturday’s matchup despite having leading scorer Tyeisha Smith on the bench with an injury. In her stead, teammates Tai Porchia, Britney Thompson and Mycah McDonald helped pick up the scoring load. Porchia’s stat line included 24 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots; Thompson hit for 20 points in the win, and McDonald added 15.

But Wednesday’s game against Blinn will feature the Lady Bucs and their high-scoring offense (at 84.7 points per game, Blinn is second in the league) against AC’s swarming defense. The stingy Lady Roadrunners are giving up an average of just 70.2 points per game and are swiping more than eight steals per contest.

Wednesday’s game at Shands Gymnasium tips off at 6:30 p.m. Live streaming will be available at angelinaathletics.com.
