Lady Roadrunner Soccer Moves into Third Place; Roadrunners Edged Out

long road trip north over the weekend proved fruitful for the Angelina College Lady Roadrunner soccer team, with the Lady ‘Runners topping both Paris College and Northeast Texas Community College to vault into third place in the Region XIV conference standings.

The Lady Roadrunners blanked Paris College 4-0 on Friday, with Alizah Mendoza scoring off a corner kick and Daisy Flores, Bre Hinojos and K.K. Reynoso adding goals. Reynoso also assisted on the Flores and Hinojos goals.

On the same night, the Roadrunners appeared headed for a loss with Paris scored a late goal for a 3-2 lead; but the ‘Runners evened the score when Freddie Barbosa drove home a shot off a rebounded penalty kick. The match ended in a 3-3 draw, with Barbosa scoring twice and Luis Garcia adding a goal. Garcia nearly won the game in overtime, but his kick nailed the crossbar instead.

On Saturday at NTCC in Mount Pleasant, the Roadrunners lost yet another match by a single goal, this time in a 3-2 loss when the Eagles scored the eventual game winner with two minutes to play. Garcia and Lalo Escareno scored for the ‘Runners in the loss.

The Lady Roadrunners on Saturday moved into third place in the standings with a 2-1 overtime win over the Lady Eagles; AC’s Lauren Martinez nailed the game winner with less than a minute to play in the second overtime. Leslie Saenz scored the other goal for the Lady Roadrunners.

Both the Lady Roadrunners and Roadrunners are on the road at Tyler College on Wednesday. The Lady ‘Runners kick off at 5 p.m., and the Roadrunners follow at 7 p.m.

Sports Information Director Gary Stallard, who also serves as a Liberal Arts Instructor, begins his eleventh season with Angelina College. Following a career as a U.S. Marine, Stallard completed his bachelor’s degree at Stephen F. Austin University, where he majored in English and Journalism. For more than 16 years, he has worked as a sports writer/columnist/photographer for the Lufkin Daily News; he continues to contribute free-lance articles on occasion. Stallard has won several awards for writing, including the Golden Hoops Award for basketball writing in 2003, Regional Sports Writer of the Year in 2004, and the Texas Press Association’s first-place award for column writing in 2007 and in 2014. He has also done basketball, football and baseball radio and live streaming play-by- play and color commentary for an ESPN affiliate. Currently Stallard serves as play-by-play broadcaster for AC basketball, baseball and softball games. Prior to arriving at Angelina College, Stallard taught English at Lufkin High School for four years. He currently teaches Developmental Writing classes at AC. He and his wife Susan live in Lufkin.
