Angelina College Soccer:

This past week proved a wild one for both AC soccer teams. On Wednesday, AC’s teams swept Northeast Texas Community College, with the No. 12 Lady Roadrunners beating the Lady Eagles 3-1 behind two goals from Camila Montero and another from Marlene Flores.

The Roadrunner men, ranked No. 4 nationally heading into Wednesday’s match, needed two overtimes to hold off NTCC’s Eagles by a 5-4 final. Despite a lightning-quick start to the match – AC’s Omar Mora scored just eight seconds after the opening kickoff – the Roadrunners found themselves battling back after the Eagles rallied from a 4-1 deficit to even the score by the end of regulation. Juan Lopez added to his career scoring goals with his 14th of the season – and the 27th of his career, another AC record. The match made it to the second overtime before the Roadrunners’ Simon Nyamudakarira banged home a deflection for the game winner.

On Saturday, both AC soccer teams celebrated Sophomore Day, with players hitting the field with family, friends and other escorts. The Lady Roadrunners handled Jacksonville College in a 4-0 final, with Julia Tamasy, Alyson Gallagher, Abigail Davila and Esperanza Cuevas scoring for AC.

AC’s men suffered a heartbreaking loss in the nightcap, falling to Jacksonville College 2-1 in double overtime. The Jaguars hit a golden goal with just 14 seconds remaining in the second extra period. The loss marked just the second for the No. 4 Roadrunners in this 2022 season.

Prior to each match on Saturday, AC’s Soccer programs honored their respective sophomores on Sophomore Day. The Lady ‘Runners recognized their 16 sophomores: Alexandra Nunez, Alyssa Briones, Yancy Quijano, Abi Hearn, Liliana Clase, Julia Tamasy, Emilie Dueck, Camila Montero, Idalia Hernandez, Tatyanna Guzman, Audrey Gallagher, Alyson Gallagher, Aliyah Bustamante, Astrid Mencia, Alexa Ramirez and Madison Wetzig.

Saturday’s matches marked the end of the regular season for both AC soccer teams, who will now embark on the road to what they hope will be a trip to the national tournament. Traffic Switch Planned In Major Construction Project

0

Motorists can expect to see traffic switched to a newly constructed roadway in coming days on a major construction project south of Zavalla.

Traffic will be switched to newly constructed roadway on the south end of a construction project that is currently underway from near FM 1270, south of Zavalla in Angelina County, to the Jasper County line. Both lanes of traffic will be switched onto new roadway from Ernest Smith Road to the county line. The change in traffic pattern will allow crews to begin reconstruction of the existing lanes through this area of the project.

Drewery Construction Co., Inc., Nacogdoches TX, is serving as contractor for the $37.8 million project that includes construction of new roadway and reconstruction of existing roadway in a 7.3-mile section of US 69 south. This project is expected to be completed in mid-2023, weather permitting.

Motorists approaching US 69 from existing farm roads, county roads and private driveways are urged to be alert to the new driving pattern as they enter the roadway.

Motorists driving through this work zone are urged to reduce speed and obey all traffic control devices. Stay alert to moving equipment and workers near the lanes of traffic as work progresses.

This project was designed to enhance the safety of US 69, which is also a designated hurricane evacuation route.

Detour Planned on Diboll Relief Route Project

0

A local major construction project will see a detour put in place for motorists beginning next week that will impact local traffic.

Work on the Diboll Relief Route will include a detour on Conner Road beginning Monday. Motorists should access Morris Road to access US 59. Message boards and signs are in place to alert motorists and local traffic.

The $140.1 million construction project was approved by Texas Transportation Commissioners in December 2019. The 5-year project is on track for completion in 2025.

“Much of the work on the Diboll Relief Route is out of view from those traveling US 59, but local traffic has been impacted several times,” said Rhonda Oaks, public information officer. “With this lane closure on Conner, local traffic will need to detour as construction continues to move toward the north end of the 8-mile project.”

Crews continue to place concrete panels on creek bridges, work on approach slabs and drill shafts. Embankment is being placed at Lumberjack Drive, and at FM 1818. Bridge rail rebar on southbound bridges and drains in various project areas are also being constructed.

Sacyr Engineering and Infrastructures, a global company headquartered in Spain, is serving as contractor for the project. Work includes construction of a new freeway location for US 59 that is being built to interstate standards from FM 2108 to 1.1 mile south of White Oak Creek.

Motorists should stay alert near the project limits for equipment, trucks and workers entering the project area. Local traffic is urged to obey all traffic control and detours within the project.
