0
Come out and laugh for a good cause. The Nacogdoches Jaycees are hosting a comedy show to gain funds to help the Nacogdoches community.
We will have big-time comedian Lavell Crawford.
Comedian, Lavell Crawford is quickly climbing the comedic ranks and becoming one of the hottest stars in the biz today. He filmed a new one-hour special in his home town of St. Louis, “Can A Brother Get Some Love?,” and is on DVD from Entertainment One. In addition, he filmed an episode of “Workaholics” for Comedy Central and he’s been casted in a recurring role on the AMC’s Emmy Award-winning “Breaking Bad.” If that’s not enough, he was also seen as a regular panelist on E! Entertainment’s “Chelsea Lately” and a regular on “Lopez Tonight,” performing in various comedy sketches on the show. From his numerous television appearances and as one of the hottest touring acts in the country, audiences are becoming increasingly familiar with Lavell’s giant-sized talent. Lavell gained huge national exposure on NBC’s hit reality series “Last Comic Standing.” Not only did NBC take notice, promptly signing Lavell to a holding deal with the network, but also Comedy Central, offering him his own half-hour standup special, “Comedy Central Presents: Lavell Crawford.” Lavell’s stand-out work includes appearances on “Shaquille O’Neal Presents: All Star Comedy Jam” which premiered on Showtime in December, “Russell Simmons’ Def Comedy Jam” on HBO, “Showtime at the Apollo,” “Martin Lawrence Presents 1st Amendment,” “Comic’s Unleashed with Byron Allen,” “Steve Harvey’s Big Time” “Comedy Central’s Premium Blend,” “Motown Live” and “BET’s Comic View.” In addition, Lavell has appeared in the films “Baby’s Mama Drama,” “Beverlyhood,” “Ghetto South Problems,” and on the televised series “The Jamie Foxx Show.” On stage, he played Ben in the hit play “Men Cry in the Dark,” based on the Michael Baisden best seller. Lavell also recently appeared on stage with the critically acclaimed production “Friends and Lovers,” a stage production based on the novel by author Eric Jerome Dickey where he played the scene-stealing Bobby. The play also featured notable actors such as Miguel Nunez (“Juwana Man”), Leon (“The Five Heartbeats”), Monica Calhoun (“The Best Man”), Mel Jackson (“Soul Food”) and Maia Campbell (“In the House”). Endeared by audiences far and wide, Lavell has built a very strong fan base playing theatres, comedy clubs and colleges across the nation in addition to festivals including HBO’s US Comedy Arts Festival, The Comedy Festival and LAFFAPALOOZA, America’s longest-running annual urban comedy festival.
Tickets start at $65 and tables are available.

AC Soccer Teams Sweep Paris Junior College

No. 14 Lady ‘Runners, No. 5 ‘Runners Pitch Shutouts

Angelina College’s soccer teams earned a big Saturday sweep against conference rival Paris Junior College, with the No. 14 Lady Roadrunners earning a 3-0 win and the No. 5 Roadrunners scrapping their way to a 1-0 win at the Larry Phillips Family Sports Complex on the AC campus.

The women’s win kept the Lady ‘Runners in second place in the conference standings.

AC’s Liliane Clase hit the nets first, taking a feed from Marlene Flores and driving the ball home in the 23rd minute for her fifth goal of the season. With just 50 seconds to play in the first half, Lady ‘Runner Julia Tamasy performed a spin move in the box, driving the ball bottom shelf of the left corner for a 2-0 AC lead at the half.

Alexa Ramirez finished off the AC scoring with a long-range shot in the 53rd minute.

Keeper Alexandra Nunez and the rest of the defenders teamed up for the group’s fifth shutout of the season.

The men’s match proved yet another nailbiter – this just three days following Wednesday’s overtime draw. Still down several key players, the Roadrunners nevertheless put together several good runs and applied constant pressure against the Dragons, but not until the 75th minute was AC able to break through. Jaheim Brown broke free on a run and was taken down on a penalty in the box, and Juan Lopez calmly converted the penalty kick for the only goal the ‘Runners needed for the night in a 1-0 win.

Keeper Jorge Gonzalez turned in three big saves, with two of those in the second half, to keep the Dragons off the scoreboard.

The win keeps the Roadrunners (4-0-1) in first place in the Region XIV conference standings.

Both the Lady Roadrunners and Roadrunners are on the road Wednesday at Mount Pleasant, where AC will face Northeast Texas Community College. The women kick off at 2 p.m., and the men will follow at 4 p.m.

AC SOCCER:

The new national rankings came out last Monday, and the polls showed the Roadrunners moving up to No. 5 and the Lady Roadrunners climbing to No. 14.

In the men’s match, the No. 5 Roadrunners – missing several key players out with injuries – fought to a 1-1 draw in double overtime with Coastal Bend Community College.

Saturday, both AC teams scored wins over Paris College, with the Roadrunners beating the Dragons 1-0 on a Juan Lopez penalty kick. The Lady Roadrunners followed with a 3-0 shutout over Paris, with Clase, Julia Tamasy and Alexa Ramirez accounting for the AC goals.

Both AC teams now embark on a long road-trip spell: The teams play a doubleheader at Northeast Texas Community College on Wednesday starting with the women at 2 p.m. On Saturday, AC’s teams are at Jacksonville College, with the Lady ‘Runners kicking off at 4 p.m.

The next home stand takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 5 against Tyler Junior College’s teams.

Angelina College Foundation Hosting Third ‘Dinner at the Diamond

Proceeds to Benefit AC Students

In what is quickly becoming a “must-experience” event, the Angelina College Foundation will host its third “Dinner at the Diamond” at Poland Field on the AC campus.

The attendance of those dining on the infield of the Roadrunner baseball team’s home field has grown considerably, with more than 600 fans participating in last year’s event. This year’s version takes place from 7-10 p.m. on Saturday, September 24, and the public is invited. Tickets are $75 for individuals and $600 for eight-person tables.

This year’s musical guest is Cody Hibbard, an Adair, Oklahoma native whose recently released self-titled EP has earned him a busy tour schedule and a place among other Texas Music artists in the charts. Hibbard’s biography is fascinating, to say the least, from his attending the United States Naval Academy (until an injury ended that dream), to working on a pipeline and playing music anywhere offering a microphone and a stage. His very first EP, “Memory and a Dirt Road” has generated millions of streams on various streaming services.

Texas Custom Catering will provide the meal, and there will be several activities to help promote the fund-raising behind the Foundation’s existence, including both live and silent auctions. Proceeds go toward the Foundation’s efforts to assist Angelina College students.

Naturally, with a sports-related theme to the evening, there will be games available as well, meaning the sports fans in attendance can try their luck at shooting hoops (“Slam Dunk”), scoring a soccer goal against AC soccer players “Ready, Set, Goal”) or throwing baseballs through a target (“Pitch Perfect”). Winners of those games will earn prizes.

And, of course, there’ll be a seventh-inning stretch and a rousing rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.”

In addition, there will be raffles featuring some impressive prizes, including a Yeti Tundra Wheeled Cooler, a 14-kt., white gold six-diamond bar necklace, a Caribbean cruise for two and a Bergara B-14 Hunter 3.08 rifle, among others.

Presenting sponsors for the event are MVP Sponsors Haylee and Brandon Belt. Numerous other sponsors have helped both the growth of the event and the benefits provided for Angelina College students. Those sponsors are listed below.

The purpose of the Angelina College Foundation is to strengthen the college’s ability to provide quality educational opportunities and services to aid students in reaching their full potential.
